Multiples

Question for someone with multiples. Are elevated levels a sign of twins?

Hi, my sister is pregnant and the doctor gave her the results of blood tests today. She said he told her certain hormone levels were really high. (don't remember which, possibly HCG) She is about 8 weeks pregnant.

She is wondering what it means. She asked him straight out if this means twins and he was vague. He said it could be twins but it could be that she is further along than he thought. (but she knows for sure when she had her last period)

Does anyone know about this? Was anyone told their levels were high. (I think HCG)

Does this sound like twins? It would be such an amazing thing. (doctor said she is the perfect age and has lots of kids which we have heard increases the chance of fraternal twins...mother who is over 30, has already had a few kids...mostly myths I think) Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself.

  • HCG levels aren't a good indicator of twins.  I know that there is a link in the Q/A at the top of this page where many, if not most, of us have listed our HCG levels in the beginning.  Progesterone levels are a better indicator however, an ultrasound is the only thing that is going to give her an affirmative answer.

  • Thanks, sorry I will check above. I am just getting ahead of myself. (too excited)

All I'm thinking about lately is babies and I can't wait for my own so when I heard about this from my sister I had to ask.  (I am over the top excited and to be honest envious too :) )

Sorry to bug anyone and thanks for the response.

  • Thanks! :)

EDIT although identical twins aren't passed down, my dad is an identical twin and my sister is as well. (lots of twins in my family) So I guess I was just hoping. I know multiples are a lot of work (two or more of everything! it's hard enough with one at a time) but I would love to help spoil some. :)

  • My levels were completely normal, nothing that might make you suspect multiples.  My first u/s at 11 weeks was quite a shock when we saw too.  Good luck to your sister!
  • my beta 14 dpo with triplets was 391!   so i thought something was up....but wasn't sure how many were in there.....i am about 8 weeks...(on Sunday) and my beta yesterday was 211,000!!   i know it's not always an indicator....in my case my levels are REALLY high!!

  • At 8 weeks why is the doctor still checking HCG?  He/she should be doing an ultrasound!

    That's what I was thinking!

I can't be any help because I didn't have any levels checked, just an u/s at 9 weeks...surprise!  There's TWO in there!

  • I'm not sure why he was doing that but she will have an ultrasound next wednesday. (he is pushing for lots of testing but she declined most)
