Refusing naps at day care

I'm not sure anyone can help, but I figured it was worth a try to ask here. DS has been in day care since the beginning of September. He napped well to start, just as he does at home (after about 2.5 hours he'd be ready for a nap - I'd lay him down in his crib and he'd fall asleep on his own). The past couple of weeks though have been a disaster. Today he slept from 9-10 AM and that was it! I tried talking with the teachers, but they weren't much help... and honestly, I'm not sure what I expect them to do if he's refusing to nap. On the weekends, he's back to his normal nap schedule and doesn't have any problems. Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice? Should I be looking at another day care? Thanks!

Re: Refusing naps at day care

  • I'm still going through this same issue as well. Mason has been in daycare since mid-August. There are days that he naps every couple hours (like he does on the weekend) and gives them no trouble at all. Then there are days that he fights sleeps and only sleeps 20 minutes the entire day. I think the teachers are missing his sleepy cues and he's getting overtired. I'm not stressing it. He takes a short nap as soon as we get home on the days that he doesn't nap well in school. He is getting better. He didn't nap at all in the beginning, and now has days that he doesn't nap only once or twice a week. I try to remind myself too that there is way more going on there than there is at home and that might distract him from sleeping.

Sorry, I really have no advice, but I'm right there with you!!

  • My LO has done that too.  I think with everything going on around him at DC, it's hard for him to go down for a nap sometimes.  My DC would let him have some quiet time in his crib for awhile if he seemed sleepy, then when he would cry, go ahead and get him up again.  That way, even if he didn't nap, he got a little rest.

  • If the only issue you're having with this daycare is the nap issue, then no... If I were you I would stay put in that daycare. I work in a daycare and I know that there is only so much you can do to get the baby to take a nap. In the infant room, each baby has his/her own schedule. So some are eating, some are playing, some are trying to sleep. This can be distracting for some babies. This won't change if you go to another daycare.

Once your baby moves up to the toddler room, everyone should have the same schedule and they should all nap at one time... which makes it so much easier for the babies. I had a little girl in my room who took a 25 min nap each day and that was it. And we had to pat her back and work with her to nap for like 40 mins just to get her to take that 25 min nap!

When she moved up to the toddler room, she now sleeps 1 hr 45 mins. Huge difference. No matter what daycare you go to, the infant room always has the potential to be loud and distracting. Someone may be teething or have an ear infection and may scream right when your LO nods off, for example.

As a PP said, she thought the DC was missing her baby's sleepy warnings. If you LO has sleep warnings, let your DC know. Let them know everything you can so they can help him get to sleep. I'm sure they'd love to work with you on this.

My LO is in my infant room class (she's the reason I went to work there). I'm that little girl's mommy and I cannot get her to take more than a 30 min nap here and a 30 min nap there (and that's if we're lucky, sometimes it's only one 30 min nap)... She's simply a light sleeper like her Mom and Dad. It's not a lack of effort on my part, I know that much lol.
