Back from pedi - not what I expected

So I took DS to the pedi today because its been almost two weeks since I cut dairy and his poops were not improved.  He'd also developed a stuffy nose, coughing, and seemed to be in pain when he burped or like he was having heartburn.  In general, he was much more fussy than usual and not sleeping well.

Pedi said he thought he had a cold and also that he thinks he has reflux and prescribed zyantac.  He said the green poops with the small amount of blood could be due to soy sensitivitiy which I suspected but he said since the amount of blood is super small (most times you cannot see it) and because he is gaining weight, that I did not need to worry about cutting out soy - just keep restricting dairy.  I was surprised to hear this, had expected to need to cut soy and I'm not so sure I'm not just going to  - to see what happens.  Anyone get similar advice from their pedis?

Re: Back from pedi - not what I expected

  • I was told by both our pedi and our Pedi GI that no amount of blood in stool is good.  DS had painful gas along with bloody stools.

If I were you, I'd cut out soy as well and see what happens. Good luck!

  • yayks!  i agree. no amount of blood is good. i have heard this multiple times.  I would cut out dairy and soy from your diet until you can see an allergist or GI.. And if the blood doesn't stop (even a little amount) i would go see a GI
  • The only time I think that blood is "ok" is if it's due to constipation or a small fissure- both temporary issues.  It looks like your little guy is too young to be dealing with either of those.  I'd get another opinion.

I would do the soy.  It might not help but it won't hurt.

  • I would see a pediatric GI.  Our pedi gave us the run around for 13 months until I demanded allergy testing which came back posiitve for eggs, soy, and peanuts.  They kept telling me he was fine and had colds and dry skin (eczema).  He is much better now that we avoid what he is allergic to...that said...I would cut out soy and see if he improves.
