So I've cut out dairy previously for 4 weeks and didn't see a total change (DS's stools became less frequent but still greenish/mucus-y) but thinking now that I should do a full blown elimination diet. Maybe I just need to cut out soy too but I don't want to do that and still not see it solved. Better to do it all at once.
Please share your elimination diet meal plans. I'm too tired to think about cutting things out and getting enough to eat (DS still gets up every 1-3hrs at night
)
Re: Elimination diet samples
my elimination diet was a big fail.. but i've learned a lot from other mommies on here. If you want to go free of the top 8, i would do that for 4 weeks.. if his symptoms are gone completely than introduce one item every 2 weeks (or maybe 1 if you want to figure it out quickly).. if something bothers him then remove it and wait couple of weeks until his symptoms clear to start introducing other things.
Keep a food journal that includes reactions
if his symptoms are still there even after eliminating the top 8 than it could be ANYTHING and i would (IMO) quick BFing.. There are kids with the strangest allergy and one that you might never pin point in your own diet. it could be a spice or something completely different.
Good luck! I hope the elimination diet works for you!
Honestly- I would cut just soy first before jumping to a total elmination diet. And if you do cut more things- I'd make a menu plan and find a bunch of healthy snacks before you start. If you go out to eat frequently- find some safe options at the places you usually frequent (if there are any).
At least for me- elmination diets can easily cut my supply. It's challenging to get enough fat and calories when your diet is super restricted and you have to really work to make sure the foods you are eating will support you nutritionally.
Elmination diets can work- but they're hard. Both physically and emotionally. Just make sure you have a plan going in. When you are ready to add back in- make sure you keep a food journal and go slowly.
I would be devastated if I had to quit BFing- I don't even want to think about it. His symptoms don't seem to be that severe (just mucus-y stools and frequent waking at night, he doesn't seem to be in pain when he wakes so maybe just a suck-to-sleep association and not allergy related). He's meeting his milestones and while small for his age, growing normally.
Maybe I will just try to cut out soy too first and hopefully that works. It's a PITA figuring out what I can eat, practically everything has dairy or soy in it. I have to work up the energy to make more from scratch.
If those are his only symptoms- I'm not sure you're dealing with an allergy at all. Mucus-y diapers can happen because of a foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, teething, colds etc. If he's not in pain, is gaining weight and hitting milestones appropriately and isn't dealing with any kind of a rash- an allergy might not be your culprit.
Not trying to undermine your efforts- just that elimination diets are a challenge and I hate to see people jump into an elimination diet if it isn't really necessary.
