Need Advice: How To Clean Vomit Out Of Car Seat

Liam got into the Halloween spirit a little early and did his best Exorcist impression all over himself and his car seat.

Awesome.

Anyway, I wiped down the seat but there is still disgusting barf residue on the straps and in the Velcro.  What is the best way to get it clean, especially the Velcro?  Thanks!

  • take your seat inside and spray it down in the sink with the squirter thing

  • Did you try vinegar and water?  Or amonia and water?

  • I would wash the cover on delicate and hang dry.

Take the straps off, and use a mixture of vinegar and water to clean them. Use a toothbrush to scrub them lightly. Do not wash them or submerge them in the water. This is a huge no no. You can lay them in the sun to dry.

I would try this mixture with a toothbrush to clean the velcro.

  • Thanks for the tips everyone.  Messing around with the car seat straps makes me nervous so I didn't want to do anything wrong.  I will get on this as soon as DH gets home and I don't have a toddler underfoot.

  • Read your manual before you put the cover in the washing machine.  Britax covers have to be hand washed.  They also told me not to use any abraisive cleaners on the straps.  I always use warm water with a little bit of dish soap and a toothbrush.  GL!
  • Ditto with the straps. I didn't know you couldn't wash them, and I did. I hung them to dry. My Britax cover still smelled like puke after running it through the washing machine, so I spread a thick mixture of baking soda and water on the puked-on parts and let it sit overnight. Then I washed it again. The smell came out after doing that.

They say hand wash, but I have always washed mine on the delicate/hand wash cycle. I have never put them in the dryer. I have had one of my seats for 3 years, and it still looks brand new. You just have to be careful.

  • Unfortunately, I have experience with this.  I took the cover off the carseat and handwashed it.  I don't think it's a good idea to machine wash it because of the foam padding.  Anyway, the velcro is the hardest part, but using soap and a toothbrush worked.  We actually had to hand wash it a second time, because there was still a faint vomit smell, which would have been enough to make ME vomit if I had to smell it in the car.
