Trying to Get Pregnant

Large Fibroid & TTC

Hi, all! I had an intrauterine sono this morning.  The tech told me that I have a "really big tumor" in my uterus, and then later explained that it could be a fibroid. She said she would expedite the findings, but that it could take up to a week for the doc to call and I am feeling a little anxious.

From what I have read, fibroids generally do not cause fertility issues (we've been trying a while), but that treatment can inhibit getting KU. Just curious if any of you have dealt with this, what was involved in your treatment. Thank you!

Re: Large Fibroid & TTC

  • I personally have not experienced this but my friend just had surgery to remove a rather large fibroid that she had in her uterus as it can complicate a pregnancy. She had been TTC for awhile.

    Sorry I'm not much help.

  • I'm sorry you have to deal with this. My RE found a fibroid during my lap and it was removed. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think they can also be removed through a hysteroscopy (which is less invasive than a lap).

FWIW - Most REs recommend removing them before proceeding with IVF, mainly because you're investing so much in that cycle, you don't want a fibroid potentially causing any issues. GL!

  • :: lurking:: I have two decent sized fibroids on my uterus, one is 7cm and the other is 4cm. Prior ttc baby number two, I had a.SIS done to make sure I didn't have any fibroids in my uterus. Since I didn't any inside my uterus we we're given the okay to ttc, as a myomectomy may have caused scar tissue that could have made it difficult to conceive. I hope this helps, feel free to pm me if you have any more questions. Sorry for any spelling or grammatical errors, I'm bumping from my phone.

  • Thank you all! Hopefully the doc will call soon so I can figure out what kind of fibroid and make plans to treat it :)

  • Speak with your Dr. Large fibroids can cause premature delivery or difficulty becoming pregnant. We commonly recommend myomectomy before TTC at my hospital.

  • I was where you are back in February- scared to death that my large fibroids would be a problem (one that was about 6cm in the wall, and one that was about 2 cm on the bottom) and my reg ob sent me to an RE because he thought that they could stop implantation.  Well we made the decision to do a lap prior to TTC due to my age (39 then) and we were not sure if we needed help and as pp have said, you want to have no barriers if you have to do IVF.

We scheduled the surgery for 4/20 and found we were pregnant on 4/11- I have been worried about them through the pregnancy even though they have not really presented any problems to date as the big one really only grew about 1 cm- and of course other ones have joined the initial 2 so I now have about 6 that they track very closely.  Each pregnancy is of course different and 3rd tri is normally where they give you problems with premature labor according to my doctor so now I go to the high risk doctor every week to make sure she still has room and is growing properly.  I am just hoping we make it to 37 weeks and so far there is every indication that we should.  She has actually been measuring ahead by 3 days to a week the entire pregnancy so we have been doing well.

Sorry the post is so long- I know I looked for every post I could find relating to fibroids and pregnancy both before and after I conceived- and still do.  I would look for a good doc to lap as yours seem to be on the smaller side of large if that makes sense.  I found a surgeon that has been doing this since 97 and is very skilled as this procedure (comfortable up to about 13cm) and laps are believed to do the least amount of damage to the uterus.  The myo can necessitate a c section later and I wanted to be able to try for a vaginal birth.  Also, they do move during pregnancy- at 13 weeks the big one was forcing my cervix over and they thought I might have to have a c- they have since moved high and now my docs don't think a vag birth will be a problem... now if i could just convince this little girl to turn!

If you want send me a pm, I am no expert, but I have researched the subject to death- there are also pretty good boards out there- one has a thread that is dedicated to women pregnant with fibroids.  Hope this helped!

  • Yes! Thank you! This makes me feel a lot better. I guess I was worried because I saw myomectomy, which can cause scar tissue and impair fertility and you have to stop trying to 4-6 months, or take estrogen reducing meds, which obviously impairs fertility.  I will for sure do my research before having any type of surgery though.  I am still just really anxious about it and wish the doc would call, but this helps ease my mind a bit. Thank you again!

Um correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that the tech should be telling you anything, by law it's should be your doctor. So maybe you should just wait it out until you speak with your doctor.

But sorry to hear about this. I've had cysts and were removed laparoscopically. Always hard to wait for new, fingers crossed all is well.

  • Yeah...I thought that was strange.  I think she knew I was upset because she kept asking me over and over again if I was sure the doctor didn't find anything on the pelvic exam. After all those questions I asked her why, if she saw something, and she said a really big tumor in my ute. Maybe that's why she gave more detail?

Thank you, everyone, for the thoughts and well wishes! And congrats to you, SKWCM80 and shae52! I hope you both have happy and healthy pregnancies!
