Baby Names

Brooke vs. Brooklyn

So DH likes Brooklyn, I like Brooke. MN will be Elisabeth.

WDYT?

I like the flow of Brooklyn Elisabeth. But I don't think I'd ever actually call her "brooklyn".

Should i push for Brooke or let him have the "official" name he wants & call her the shorter version?

Re: Brooke vs. Brooklyn

  • I much, much prefer Brooke to Brooklyn. Brooke Elisabeth is lovely. Brooklyn is not cute at all IMO.

  • Brooke is an official name of its own; it's not a shortened form, so it's just as legit. Yes, you could shorten Brooklyn to Brooke, but then there's no reason your husband can't nickname her Brooklyn if her real name is Brooke... see what I mean?

Push for it! I hate Brooklyn and I love Brooke, so I'm on your side! Brooke Elisabeth still sounds great.

  • Brooke - Classic and pretty

Brooklyn - trendy and kind of trashy IMO.  I don't like this name at all

Brooke goes much better with Abigail nn Abby too!!!

  • Yay Brooke!  Nay Brooklyn.

  • There is such a huge difference to me between the two names.. Brooke is classic pretty strong feminine name  and Brooklyn is celeb-trendy-unisex-nycborough...

  • I'm a Brooke and I much prefer it. People call me Brookelyn as a NN, but I don't like the Brooklyn trend at all. I think Brooke is more timeless.

  • I really dislike both, but love Elisabeth.

If I HAD to pick one, I would pick Brooke over Brooklyn

  • I like Brooklyn. However! If you are just going to be calling her Brooke, name her Brooke. That is such a pet peave of mine! Like, don't name your daughter Abigail if you will only ever call her Abby. Unless it's a family name. Sorry for the rant. Anyways, I think Brooklyn Elizabeth sounds better too.

I agree. Brooklyn is super trashy. I don't like Brooke either, but it's better.

  • Brooke x100000. Brooklyn is too trendy.
  • I LOVE Brooke - we're planning on using it if this baby is a girl.  I really don't like Brooklyn.  It just makes me think of the NYC borough...kind of like naming your baby Manhattan or Harlem.  And I really don't like when people suggest using Brooklyn instead.

  • I live in Brooklyn, and LOVE it there, but I wouldn't name a kid that any more than I'd name him/her Topeka or Dayton.  Brooke is much nicer.

I was born in Brooklyn.  My parents were born in Brooklyn.  I love Brooklyn.  It is a beautiful part of NYC.  It has great character, charm, and culture.  It is such a dumb name for a little child.

  • Brooke is a very cute girl's name.  Brooklyn is a borough and a bridge.  Please use Brooke :)

  • We are naming our daughter Brooklyn so I vote for that, but that's also because Brooke just sounds too short for me and it sounds awful with our last name (but that doesn't really matter to you!).  I should also state that I live in Northern/Western Canada so the city connection is much less here and I literally know zero other Brooklyn's so the trendy aspect of it isn't as strong here either.

  • I like Brooklyn better. But I'm a little biased because it's my nieces name. She's almost 10 and when she was born I didn't hear the name very often. I still don't hear it much now.

As for a lot of people saying it sounds trashy, I don't think that at all. But as a prevoius post says if you're going to call her Brooke, just name her that. I'm not a fan of someone naming their child one thing with no intention of using that name.

  • Brooke Elisabeth for sure.
  • LOVE love Brooke!!
  • Brooke >>> Brooklyn

  • I'm not a big fan of the name Brooklyn, but I do think it flows better with Elisabeth than Brooke does.
  • DD is Brooke, so I'm partial to it. I don't like the trendiness of Brooklyn.

    This.

I'm also a Canadian and I don't associate the name Brooklyn with a place. I think it's a very pretty name and I don't get why it's trashy.
