Baby Names

Charlotte vs. Charly???

Okay so I need some serious guidance here...

Originally FI and I picked Charlotte a.k.a Charly for DD and it was perfect, fit our personalities, we loved it etc etc then about 2 months ago I nixed it... I got so sick of hearing Charly! NO ONE called her Charlotte anymore even FI :'( and I decided it sounded corny even in my head if I bumped my belly I'd think "Sorry Charly" SORRY CHARLIE??? Seriously how many times have I heard that as a term ugh!

So we started playign with names, I became massively stressed out but we finally settled for Avamarie Elizabeth - Ava popped into my head FI liked it a lot but we both agreed it was too short by itself, didn't like any of the long forms listed in our book, knew we wanted Marie as her middle (it's MIL and both SILs mn) so we smushed them together hence Avamarie, with my mn Elizabeth as hers.

I like Ava... I *think* and I love the meanings to Avamarie Elizabeth, but Ava is sooo popular... and I've found myself thinking so much about Charlotte... what are the odds we could name her Charlotte and everyone would shut the heck up about Charly??

Re: Charlotte vs. Charly???

  • Avamarie is very cute.  I prefer Carly and Lottie as nn's for Charlotte.  If you don't want people to call her Charly, just tell them "Her name is Charlotte, please don't call her Charly."

  • I love Lottie but FI completely hates that, he says it sounds like your calling a dog :( and I would but everyone already got used to calling her Charly because it was our pick for 3 months... and by everyone I mean EVERYONE... would it be rude to correct people? I think I might feel awkward correcting close family :/ almost guilty too...

Do you like Charlotte or Avamarie better oh and we would call her just Ava too... I forgot to mention that...

  • It's not rude at all as long as you don't cop an attitude when you correct them.  "Please call her Charlotte" should suffice.  I was forever correcting people when they tried to shorten my name (Gianna) to G or Gia, I hate that.

ETA: I prefer Charlotte, but I like the idea behind Avamarie, I don't dislike it at all.

  • Hmmm I guess so... I've always had a shortened name, Cassandra-Cassie. I hated it but when I tried to push for people to call me Cassandra in school, they told me I was being snotty and prissy... it drove me crazy so I finally gave up plus everyone pronounces my name wrong anyway (instead of the flat "A" it's pronounced Cassondra.. I wish my mom had spelled it with an O just to eliminate confusion).

I like them both, my biggest thing with Ava is how popular it is, I don't want her to become Ava D. because of the 6 other Ava's in her class!!

  • DH's cousin has a 6 year old daughter name Charlotte and I have never once heard anyone call her Charlie. I don't think its as automatic of a nickname for Charlotte as Mike is for Michael or anything like that. Plus Charlie has the same number of syllables as Charlotte, so its not like anyone is shortening the name by calling her Charlie.

If you love Charlotte, just go with Charlotte and call her that. I don't think a nickname is necessary.

If her full name is Avamarie, then I don't think she'll ever become Ava D.  She'll be Avamarie!

I don't like smushed names, but this one is okay.  I'd go with it over Charlotte.  I love Charlotte, don't get me wrong, but I *hate* the nickname Charlie and anything that would lead me to that I'm going to avoid.

Haha that is true! I can't believe I never thought of that! Wow talk about baby brain! Haha and yes I know I have really started to despise Charlie as a nn... I thought it was cute at first but then EVERYONE would call her Charlie and never Charlotte and it pissed me off!

  • I would never call a little girl Charlie unless I got the cue from the parents to do so,, I think you should just tell people now to please refrain from calling her that and I can't imagine it would be a problem.   I like Ava a lot and don't think its any more popular than Charlotte.   I would much prefer just Ava with either Marie or Elizabeth as a MN though
  • I feel like I've read this post before, but maybe a different person posted it? I actually love Charlie, but not spelled Charly. And I don't know of anyone named Charlotte that I've ever heard called Charlie either. But I totally understand where you are coming from. I think we all get nicknames in our head from full names and worry about it. A few years ago before we knew DS was a boy we loved Sophia (ugh, so popular, argh!) but I was obsessed that people would call her Sophie, which I hated!
