3rd Trimester

Working night shifts in third trimester?

So I'm a full time nurse and my rotation has me working 13 days than 6 nights. I have recently been lectured by numerous staff that I shouldn't be working nights now that I'm this far Along (32 weeks). My next nights I will be 34 weeks. I actually prefer night shifts cuz they are not as physically exhausting and I sleep good still. I thought they were just saying I shouldn't work for my sanity but today they said it's bad for the baby. why is this?? And wouldn't my ob say something? I work with many of his gyne pts on a post surgical unit so he knows my job. What's the big deal with night shifts???

Re: Working night shifts in third trimester?

  • That makes no sense to me.  The baby has no idea whether it is day or night from where it is hanging out.  I would imagine, as long as you are getting the sleep you need, and getting the nourishment you need, your schedule wouldn't matter.

  • maybe they're more risky who knows. i dnt see there being any problems with it, as long as your getting the rest you need and not lifting heavy things or anything crazy like that.lol. im sure you're fine but if you are second guessing it personally ask your doctor.
  • nothing. I just worked my last night shift before leave several days ago. I've been doing nights for 3 years. I think it's easier. I do less running and actually get to eat and throw my feet up.

Do any of your co workers have kids? & have any of them worked as a nurse during pregnancy? I am also a nurse. I work nights in an ICU & couldn't imagine working days! The nights are much calmer, less moving of patients, & Drs/families to deal with! This is my second time being pregnant while working this shift as a nurse & my dr. has never mentioned any dangers related to working nights.
  • I really don't think it matters if you are working day shift or night shift if the job is the same. If you OB is okay with it, then I would just ignore them!

  • I work night shifts too. 12:30-9:00am.  I'm 33 weeks.  I hate the night shift and can't wait to be finished because I have trouble sleeping during the day.  I think thats the only thing you need to be worried about, just getting enough sleep for the baby and not being exhausted.  I would like to know why midnights are so bad to work so I can tell my doctor so maybe she'll let me get off work early! lol
