Positive HPT, Inconclusive Blood Test

I'm wondering when did you have a blood test to confirm your pregnancy?   My doctor told me to come in as soon as I think I?m pregnant, which I took to mean when I got a + on a HPT.

I got my first BFP on Monday at 10 dpo, and have continued to get them every day since.  I?ve used Wondfo, First Response Early Result, and Clear Blue Digital.  They all agree ? pregnant.

I had a blood test yesterday which came back ?inconclusive?, and my doctor wants me to come back in a week.   I?m a little worried (first time mom nerves).  I thought the blood test was supposed to be more accurate than the HPT?

Re: Positive HPT, Inconclusive Blood Test

  • There should be a number associated with you blood test if they did a quantitative HCG test.

  • You need a quantitative not a qualitative test.  My understanding is that if it is just a yes/no test that anything between 5 and 25 can come back inconclusive.

At 10dpo, my quantitative blood test came back at 12 - which would have been inconclusive on a qualitative blood test.

Blood tests are infinitely more sensitive, but most people I know get quantitative ones.

  • My doctor never gave me any numbers associated with my blood tests and I'm guessing yours didn't either.  Over 5 is pregnant, and under 2 is NOT pregnant, but you could be at a 4 or so, which is a gray area.  It could just be that you are very early on.  In a week you will get some more conclusive results.  Good luck!

A 4 would not show up on all those urine HPTs.

OP, here are a several links for you about qualitative blood tests and their 25mIU sensitivity:

    https://www.babymed.com/pregnancy-tests/how-early-can-pregnancy-be-detected

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy_test

    https://www.americanpregnancy.org/duringpregnancy/hcglevels.html

    https://www.sqperu.com/Basics/Pregnancy-test.html

In effect, this makes qualitative blood tests less accurate than some urine HPTs on the market.  If you got that many positives on your HPTs, you are pregnant.  I would either ask for a quantitative blood test or a repeat of the qualitative blood test in a couple days.

  • For what it's worth, my first blood test showed my HCG at a 2 after several positive urine tests. When I got it retested a couple days later it was 2300.  The lab just majorly screwed up somehow--I still have no idea if they ran the test wrong or mixed up my blood with someone else's or whatnot. So lab results can be wrong or inconclusive for reasons not related to you.

  • My Dr trusted a pee test to be conclusive evidence that I was KU. Only time I had blood drawn was when I started bleeding to check levels... (And that was almost 9 weeks)
  • My Dr. told me to call to make an appointment as soon as we became pregnant.  So, I did, and our appointment is 11/10.  I called on October 9.  Is it weird that they didn't tell me to come in for a blood test before the appt?  I think in the paperwork they sent me it said they were going to do all that at my appt.  It seems lots of people on here go beforehand though.

    Hmm!
