Cloth Diapering

need help with diaper funk

Hello - I don't normally post on here, but need some ideas.  I've got some serious funk smell going on with my diapers lately.  They are smelling straight out of the wash, not just after being used, so I don't think it's soap build-up.  I use Rockin Green Soft Rock (because I have a water softener).  It's my inserts and my covers.  I do a hot wash.  I have a few in particular that have been through the hot wash twice and a vinegar wash and are still extra funky.  I've tried OxiClean soak, and baking soda prewash in the past with not so good results.  Any other suggestions?

  • I ended up soaking mine over night in the Rock N Green and that got out the smell.  I doubled the amount as well.  Also use extra water to make sure they are getting well swished and well rinsed.

  • You mention a hot wash but are you doing a cold rinse or cold wash first? If not, I'd suggest adding it. The pre-wash or rinse gets the poo and pee out so that you cam wash the diapers, otherwise you're just washing in all of that gunk. I'd also second a soak and would suggest adding more detergent as "barnyard stink" is usually am indication that more detergent is needed. If those things don't work, you could also try a different detergent. I know RnG has a great following but I also see plenty of people on here that say their diapers stink when they used it.

I do a cold rinse first.  Then hot wash, cold rinse, then an extra cold rinse at the end.  I have a water softener, so worry about the soap not all rinsing out, so it makes me nervous to add even more...
