xp - soaking thru pull ups at night?

DS is 3 and has been PTed for a long time in the day (nearly a year). I really don't think he's ready for night time training - and I certainly am not. But 2/3 nights he is soaking through his pull ups, and I end up having to change the sheets anyway. Sometimes he says it's happening just before he gets up, but sometimes he says he doesn't know when  it happens (though logically it'd be mornings - or he'd wake up?) We've tried a few different brands and it doesn't seem to make any difference. Does anyone have any advice?

  • Are you using the nighttime pull-ups? They definitely seem more absorbent. DS still pees a lot a night and we haven't had an issue.

Are you talking about Good Nites?  If so, have you ever seen them in 2T/3T sizing?  I've looked and can't find anything smaller than 4T I think and my S is ridiculously skinny... they would fall off of him.  We're having the same problem as the OP!

  • We tried night-time pull ups too (not that brand - we live overseas, so a random British brand). It was just as bad.

No, I've never tried Good Nites. We just use the Huggies Nighttime Pull-ups. They come in 2-3T or 3-4T. I don't know if they are different than Good nites, honestly.

OP, you probably wouldn't want to go back, but can you do overnight diapers? Or put two pairs of pull-ups on? I don't really have any other suggestions.

  • I was wondering about diapers. Are tehy more absorbant than pull ups? (We used cloth before pull ups, so I don't have perspective.)

    Yes, they are.

I've had great success with both kids with overnight diapers (Huggies Overnights are great). No leaks. The general thought is also to go up a size, too.

It's worth a shot at night if you don't think it will confuse or set your LO back. I don't think my DS cares about diapers vs. pull-ups, but some kids are probably more sensitive and you certainly don't want to mess up a good potty routine.

  • Thanks! I'll have a chat with him and see what he thinks. I know he doesn't like waking up wet so may be happy with the trade off.

  • We use Target brand size 6 diapers for DS1. For whatever reason, they are more absorbent than Huggies Overnites.

We also have DS1 go potty right before he climbs into bed and immediately when he wakes up.

  • My son leaks in the overnight pull ups so I put him back in diapers.  He's not fully PT yet so it's not a big deal to him.  I also bought some diaper inserts that have helped a ton.  Basically they are like feminine pads without adhesive that I just tuck in the diaper.  They were super cheap at Babies R Us....like $4 for a pack.
  • DD wears a pull-up during her nap and Huggies Overnights diapers for nights. The diapers hold a lot more than the pull-ups.

  • We had the same problem so we started limiting his drink intake after supper which helped a lot.  Once we took away the sippy cup he can no longer guzzle his milk down and now stays dry through the night.
  • DS doesn't get any more fluids after 7pm (bedtime is 8:30 pm).  I have him do plenty of potty breaks during our bedtime routine, ignore the requests for water (since he uses it as a stalling technique) and put him in Huggies overnights in size 3T-4T.  He mostly stays dry, we haven't had any instances of him soaking through these.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks ladies! I asked him whether he'd like to stay dry but wear diapes (no!), try wearing nothing and going pee i the night (no!) or stay as we are and get wet in pull ups sometimes (yes!). We're trying limiting drinks after dinner (5pm for 7:30 bed) and seeing if that works. It did last night, so fingers crossed!

  • My DD just turned 4 and we still wake her up and have her go potty when we go to bed.  She's in regular underwear but we've only had 3 accidents in almost a year.  I'm confident if we didn't do that, it would be several times a week.  And she's so out of it, she goes right back to sleep without a problem.
