Starting IVF with a cyst?

I went in for my baseline u/s today and they found a 3cm cyst on my right ovary. They took my blood and told me that if the cyst isn't producing estrogen then it's fine to start stimming on Saturday. I'm kind of worried about it, though. Wouldn't stimming make the cyst even bigger? Wouldn't that throw off my estrogen levels? Wouldn't a cyst take up a follicle that could be used to produce another egg for IVF? Unfortunately I didn't think of any of these questions before I left. I want to start stimming ASAP, just because I'm ready to get this show on the road. But I would rather wait and start with a clean slate if that would get me a better result. What do you guys think?

Re: Starting IVF with a cyst?

  • I had two cysts at baseline on our last cycle.  We went forward with stims and truth be told, I didn't even know about the cysts until after the cycle ended.  Turned out that the cysts had resolved on their own even during the cycle.  See what your RD has to say!  And good luck to you!  A cyst doesn't necessarily mean you'll need to wait another month.

  • It could totally impact your cycle negatively, so proceed as long as you're okay with that. Neither clincs I have been to would even consider proceeding with a cyst of any kind. I know girls on the boards move forward with cysts, but I need all the help I can get. GL with your decision.

  • I had one at my baseline appt, and my Dr would only let me proceed if I had it drained. I had it drained, is that an option?

  • We are doing iui's not ivf. Our dr will not let us proceed with cysts.

  • I am doing IVF with cysts. No one told me of course-- I just found out yesterday that one was there at baseline.  It is a complex cyst (versus a simple cyst). My RE does not check E2 at baseline but I'm fairly certain it is producing estrogen since my E2 is higher than it should be for the # of follies I have.  I can only talk to the nurse so I can't even ask the RE why she thought it was OK to proceed. I have no answers for you as some RE's seem to go ahead while others don't.  I was not permitted to do an IUI cycle last spring with a cyst with a different RE. I don't get it and am annoyed I was not even informed it was there.

  • I started stimming with two cysts on Monday. When I went in for an u/s today they said one went away. I was really surprised the cycle wasn't canceled; the only thing I can think of is that maybe it wasn't producing estrogen and that coupled with the fact that bigger part of the problem seems to be MFI, that may be why we started. But now I don't know, and quite frankly , I feel a little stupid for not pushing the issue. I too, spoke with the nurse, not the RE. I think i felt okay about going ahead because my doctor seems to really want to maximize my chances. If this one fails though, or if my follie count isn't good, I'll definitely think twice about proceeding with another one if i have cysts.

  • I had a non-functional cyst on my first attempt at IVF. I'm not sure how big it was at baseline, but they took measurements at all monitoring appointments and it did get bigger. Make sure that you ALWAYS clarify that they are seeing a cyst (not a follicle), as the nurse's confusion caused a big medication mix-up for me. Unfortunately, there was only ever one growing follicle on that ovary. I don't know if the cyst had something to do with that ovary's poor response, but I can't help but wonder. They mentioned aspirating it before beginning stims, but decided not to. Also, they said they would aspirate it during ER, but I didn't make it to that point. I read stories of many women having successful IVF cycles with a cyst, but I can't help but wonder if it negatively impacted my cycle. Good luck!

  • My nurse found a cyst at my baseline u/s and we still proceeded. She said as long as it's not producing estrogen (which it wasn't) and not a certain size (I can't remember what size she said) that it was ok. Tomorrow is my next u/s (I've been on stims for four days) so we shall see what the cyst looks like now. GL!

  • They called back and said that the cyst is producing estrogen, so I'm supposed to keep taking the BCP and see them again on the 31st to check how it's going. I'm really bummed because I was ready to start right away. But ultimately I'm glad. With as much money as this is costing me I'd rather be safe than sorry. And I'd like to start out with a clean slate, so to speak. Thanks ladies!
  • I have what they called a paratubal or transtubal cyst at baseline... but I have no tubes!  So I guess it is where the tubes *would* be.  The nurse said it isn't on my ovary but next to it, and it isn't producing estrogen.  They had me proceed with an IVF cycle and have noted it at each follie check.  I asked and the nurse said it was not growing.  My main RE said he thinks it could be an adhesion from my surgery in July.  Interestingly that same side it's on is the side that has more activity follie-wise.

I see that you got your answers anyway, though ~ and since it's producing estrogen I can definitely see why they have you waiting and continuing BCPs.  Definitely a clean slate is the way to go if it's an option!  :)  Good luck!
