Trying to decide if I should max out my FSA

Or is it called HSA?  I've never participated in this program before.  I'm thinking if I really do IVF next year it would be great to max it out and have $5000 tax free money going towards it, but sh!t what if I don't end up doing IVF next year, won't I lose that money? I don't know what to do?  I feel like if I did max it out, it would give me a push to doing IVF because apparently I'm in never-ending limbo mode. Stupid IF and Money.

Re: Trying to decide if I should max out my FSA

  • If it's an HSA (and you have a high ded plan) you don't lose it at year end, it rolls over, so you should find out if you qualify for this or not.  If it's an FSA, I found it very easy to use all of ours, and not just for IVF.  We had it funded this year for acu, L&D, etc, but then I had a m/c and we used it for an FET.  When I left my job, we were able to set another mid-yr w/DH's job since we had a change of status.  GL deciding.

  • FSA-is a use it or lose it. So if you do not use the max amount by the end of the year, you lose it.

I have an FSA and I have maxed it out for the past 2 yrs. It has saved us w/IF treatments. I would max it out. I

HSA-I am not familiar with but I know it is not a "use it or lose it"

  • You can use FSA for all kinds of things that are not related to fertility - regular dr. copays, prescription copays, dental work, contact lenses and glasses, insurance deductibles, acupuncture, any out-of-network costs...I do FSA every year!  It saves me money and I always find a way to use it.  Do a little research on what expenses are reimbursable for you and decide that way.

When I take out a lot (we can do up to $10,000), I always tell myself that if I don't use it, I will get LASIK surgery...but I always wind up using it :)

  • I've been @ this job for 2.5 years & even though I don't have insurance through here (DH's is MUCH better) we do have an FSA which I've maxed out every year.  It's basically our infertility tx fund; I seriously don't use it for anything else.

  • I would. I put 4k on mine this year. Just make sure you use it for all the little co pays and meds too, they add up. Also in my case since I got laid off I had to use it all by 9/30, but luckily I owed enough at the RE and got glasses, so it worked out.
