Tylenol PM?

I really miss sleep. My hips hurt so bad at night and the frequent trips to the bathroom are becoming more frequent (even tho the amount of pee is less). Anyway, a friend of mine said that she occasionally took Tylenol PM to help with night time aches and to sleep better. I checked with Dr Google and so far it appears to be safe but I'd really would like to check with a real Dr before I take any. Has anyone asked their Dr's about this? It's too late for me to call my Dr and I'm considering taking just one before bed.

Re: Tylenol PM?

  • my dr said regular tylenol only or if none available because of recall i could do extra strength but just do 1... warm milk can help with falling asleep as a natural remedy though :)

  • I have struggled for years with insomnia and while I was going through my pre-conceptual counseling, my dr told me that instead of the schedule C drugs I was taking for sleep, that I should try Tylenol PM. At first I was skeptical, but as soon as that double line appeared, that's what I have been taking. Both my OB and my perinatologist are aware and in aggreeance with this. Acetominphen is perfectly fine for pregnant women.

  • My dr. said ONLY take tylenol PM, no other sleep meds.  Tylenol is the safest and she said as long as you take it according to the dosing on the bottle it is completely safe. Although I try to take as little as possible.

  • My doc told me to take Benedryl to help sleep. Won't help with your aches and pains, but safe for pregnancy.

  • My doctor said that both Tylenol PM and Unisom are safe to take when pregnant.  They are both Class B which means that that they are presumed safe, but no well controlled human studies have been conducted.

ETA: Other Class B drugs include prenatal vitamins and regular Tylenol.

  • Things to try: melatonin supplements, warm bath, warm milk, tea, acupuncture, benadryl.

Ambien is prescribed as well for sleep, it's a class c. I have yet to use it personally, but I'm sitting on a low dose ambien rx since I haven't been able to sleep for more than 4 hours in a 24 hour time period for over 2 weeks (despite trying all of the above) and lack of sleep has been making me physically ill. I'm not considering using it until it's a weekend when DH is home to take care of LO if it conks me out too much.

FWIW, I have (and also had with my first) pregnancy insomnia. There is no physical reason for me to wake up-peeing, heartburn, etc...and no "emotional" reason either. I was able to get about 5 hours/night from week 30 on with my first, but now it's down to 3-4 hours/night, plus taking care of a toddler all day.

  • My OB suggested taking it after I told her about my problems sleeping.  She said all it is is Tylenol and Benadryl.  I looked over thier approved medicaiton list they gave me at my first appointment and it was on there.

  • All Tylenol PM is is actaminophen (Tylenol) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl).

Both are safe in pregnancy.  If you're not having any aches/pains my OB suggested just taking Benadryl to help with sleep, but you said you're achy, so Tylenol PM would be a good choice.

Trust your OB, if they say to try it it is safe, they wouldn't recommend something that would hurt you or your baby.

  • My doc has Tylenol PM on the safe list.  It has the word occasionally next to it though, so I take that as, only when I'm in DIRE need of sleep.  I've taken it 2 or 3 times since I've been pregnant and had no issues.

  • Like PP said, it's perfectly safe.  Like indomesticbliss, I am down to about 3-4 hours of sleep a night on a good night.  I have taken the PM for the sleep and how miserably uncomfortable I have been (to the point of not being able to sit, lay, stand, etc).

It's a class B like any of the normal things you would take in pregnancy.

  • Thanks Ladies! I actually took one last night and had much better sleep. I was a little groggy this morning (and late for work) but I think my body really needed the extra sleep.

  • My MW recommended Tylenol PM during my last pregnancy because I was so exhausted. I only took it twice before I had my daughter, but it did work really well. I won't take it this time because I'm afraid I won't hear my daughter if she needs me, but I wish I could take it.

  • My OB approved it! I probably take it twice a week now. She also said benedryl was fine.
