My DS has always showed the symptoms of being lactose intolerant and possibly having other allergies. He had all the classic symptoms of being colicky and I tried to eliminate diary, acidic foods, and others on a trial basis. At the time I wasn't really educated enough and didn't seek out enough help from the lactation consultant. We ended up putting him on Nutramegin for milk protein intolerance and I pumped/freezed my milk. We tried and tried to get him back on all BM but it took a very long time. By then he was so use to the bottle he wouldn't latch. Long story short, even after that he never had a solid bowel movement and had very foul smelling bowel movements. We pushed and pushed the pedi but ended up having to do our own trial/error testing once he turned one and was transitioned to cow's milk. Fast forward to the present and I am 9 weeks pregnant and my Dr has me on the blood type diet (O), no diary, no wheat, no corn, no potatoes, no coconut, etc and I don't eat soy.
Should I just stick with this and continue once I start breastfeeding again? I'm having a really hard time with my m/s. Does anyone have experience with this?
Re: Lactose intolerant toddler and pregnant - when to eliminate
just curious, why are you on the blood type diet? what is that? Were you on this diet when you were pregnant w/ DS1? Just curious if there is a medical reason or just a preference.
I honestly don't think i would stick to the diet unless there is a medical reason. I would probably try avoiding certain things but not all. I guess it depends on what the reason for you going on the diet is.
I gained about 39 lbs with my son and by the end of the pregnancy my blood pressure and blood sugar was getting very high. I ended up being induced to prevent having an emergency c-section. At my 6 week postpartum visit I had actually gained more weight, instead of losing any.
I never lost any weight breastfeeding or postpartum and while my blood pressure is back to normal (low), my blood sugar/glucose is pre-diabetic. My Dr put me on the diet to see if it would help me lose weight and to see if it would help would my blood sugar. I also had very low hormone levels and my thyroid was functioning barely at a normal rate. He said he would be surprised it I was even able to ovulate. My OB told me to go off the pill when I was ready and try right away. I ended up getting pregnant that first cycle. I had my 8 week prenatal visit with my OB and she did blood work and an glucose test, I am still waiting for the results.
has your son ever been tested? So is he now drinking wcm without any issues?
I would see a nutritionist for yourself... one that focuses on specific diets and/or diseases (diabetes..). I went to one when i had gestational diabetes and she helped me tremendously!
I had GD during my first pregnancy and she put me on a strict diet but it did not require anything to be fully eliminated. My OB actually told me to completely eliminate carbs and sugars and the nutritionist was against that. I had to be very cautious with my sugar intake and only eat 30 - 40g of carbs 3 times a day (seems a lot for GD, but it really wasn't when you start adding carbs from veggies). I always had a problem loosing weight but those simple number worked for me. The nutritionist who stressed about good carbs.. and actually told me to eat potatoes.
I have read about blood type diets before (long time ago) and I'm sure it's a healthy way of living but i feel like your meat intake increases too much and meat isn't processed as fast as other foods so you actually gain weight in the long run. But that's the vegetarian in me talking.
Thank you for the advice. My manager and his wife actually go to a Nutritionist and I've been thinking about going. I actually don't eat much meat. I eat Ezekiel bread in the AM with a banana. For lunch I eat brown rice, veggies, and grilled chicken or fish. For dinner, I sometimes eat pasta made from brown rice or sweet potatoes, we rotate pork/fish/beef/chicken/meatless dinners, and then we always have veggies or salad. I do "cheat" here and there, I had gluten free/wheat free waffles this AM but yesterday had cereal. All in moderation! I've lost about 10 lbs so far and haven't gained anything with this pregnancy yet. I also started biking and walking more consistently.
My son is lactose intolerant and drinks organic lactose free cow's milk. He has been tested for environmental allergist and for mango and pineapple. Everything came back negative at this time. His Asthma/Allergy Dr won't test him for food allergies without a specific pattern/reaction. Since he's been on the asthma regimen his wheezing, rashes, and congestion is much better.
