This makes me /nosewrinkle. It just sounds silly to me, especially since you say they got it from the movie. I like Leo as a nickname, but I prefer it from Leonard.
When I found out, I immediately wished they had gone with Leonard or Leon. But they are dead set on Leonidas.
*shrugs* I might be in the minority, but I like it. I don't understand how if they're Greek or not has anything to do with it. We don't go around asking all the Isabelles if they have French heritage or the Aidans if they are Irish.
I think Leo is such a cute name and Leonidas is better than Leonard in my opinion.

I feel exactly the same way. I think Leonidas is a badass name. Leonard is horribly old farty to me.

I hate Leon and Leonard. I love Leo. Leonidas is not my style, but I don't hate it, and at least it isn't made up.

I agree. I like Leonidas actually. I think it's a nice full name for Leo. And hell--my two frontrunners right now were inspired by movies we love. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

I agree with both posters above, with all the Sophias and Bellas out there people really can't complain about a Leonidas not being officially Greek. It is a solid historical name.

This. Word for word.
Better than another Quinn, Miles, Aiden, etc etc.
Not that there is anything wrong with those names at all, I'm just saying I appreciate that it's different. Sometimes I wish we would have been more daring with Oliver's name.
Yeah, I love it. I live in Michigan and a lot of our friends are hard core Michigan State Spartans fans, so it's been used in our circle. It's a solid, real, historical name with a great nickname.

I like the name, but I think it's completely bizarre to give such an ethnic name to a child that has no Greek in him. And, fwiw, I think it's weird when people who are not remotely Irish or Welsh decide to name their kids Niamh and Rhys.
For the Sophias or Isabelles, I think those names are global, so I don't have an issue. For an Amelie/Carmen/Inga, if you're not French/Spanish/German, I think it's weird.

My Sister married into a very greek family and traditionally the first-born son is named after the grandfather so my Nephew's name is Vasilios. He goes by Lios (LEE-oh-s, like Leo with an s) and I love it. They considered making his short form "Lio" (Leo), which I like too.

My husband is obsessed with this name too! Leo is our number 1 for a boy, but he doesn't think Leo can stand alone.
The way it sounds in my head, sounds like a disease to me.
Leon- itis.

I love Leonidas! My friend has two little boys named Lorenzo and Leonidas. Enzo and Leo = cutest sibset ever, IMO.
Our chosen girl's name is from a favorite movie also.
