Sending grocery store cupcakes to daycare

Convince me that it's not necessary to muster the energy (that I really don't have right now) to make cupcakes from scratch for T's daycare birthday party this week and that it's ok to just go to the grocery store or bakery.  Luckily there are no allergy issues and no limitations on what we're allowed to bring.  I don't have to be super-mom and make something if I don't really want to, right?  (I'm making the cake for her party this weekend, and my mom is already fussing at me about it, so I don't think I'm really in the baking spirit.)

Re: Sending grocery store cupcakes to daycare

  • All of C's birthday goodies (DC cupcakes, cake for his b-day dinner) were purchased at Wegman's this year. No complaints. We even got a nice chocolate cake instead of a cutesy kid's cake for his dinner.

  • our DCP actually prohibits home-made cupcakes!

I brought in vanilla pudding this year and ice cream pops last year. Kids will love it no matter what you bring!

  • We go to a daycare center, and you are not allowed to make things to bring in.  Everything has to be store bought with labels that say they don't contain anything anyone could be allergic to.  If it may contain one of the groups, we can't bring it.  So they can do ice cream or oreos for birthdays, or popsicles.  That being said, even if I could make from scratch, I probably wouldn't since it is a lot of effort and the kids won't care, and we did all the homemade fancy stuff for the party.

Ditto. Other nesties recommended Whole Foods mini cupcakes, and they were great for J's daycare party. I did make the cake for his home party, but I'm pretty sure he didn't care (as long as it was orange, which it was (ish)).

  • DS ate store-bought cake at daycare and got the cake from scratch at home. Do what makes sense!

  • This makes me want those mini vanilla cupcakes now.  They are better than any vanilla cupcake I have ever made.
  • Ooh - I totally forgot about the WF cupcakes.  I'm sold! Thank you :)

Last year there was another boy in DC who shared the same birthday and his mom made a big deal about having the dad make cupcakes for their (joint) party.  I think it set me up thinking I need to so the homemade thing this year.  Crazy talk for a weeknight :P

  • There are some good grocery bakery sections in our area! The safeway @ Tyson's corner has won awards for their cupcakes & I can attest to their yummyness. If you want to bake something fresh but not from scratch, there's always the cake mixes which I think taste just as good. If you want to just pick something up for the daycare, there's no guilt to be had! I think it's totally normal. I mean, who bakes from scratch for 1) the birthday party 2) the family celebration and 3) the school/day care celebration?! No one I know.

  • I think store bought cupcakes are fine. If you want to go the extra mile, buy some that are fairly "natural" and don't have artificial stuff in them. I can attest that the WF mini cupcakes are delicious.

  • I sent grocery store cupcakes to daycare for DS1 birthday party.  Who has the time or energy to make them?
