Babies: 6 - 9 Months

HELP! 6mo + Daycare + solids

How are you ladies handling this?  We have been doing solids at home for about a month just in the evenings.  At 6 months I thought maybe she was ready for two or three meals a day.  Rice in the morning at daycare, a veggie/fruit for lunch, and then our nightly meal.  However, I don't know how this will affect her BM intake.  I want the majority of her calories to come from BM (right?).  So do I just have daycare feed her in the morning, skip the lunch solids until 8 months and see what happens.  FTM here and so confused on this!   TIA for the comments and suggestions on what worked for you

Re: HELP! 6mo + Daycare + solids

  • I just started sending solids to daycare yesterday. I have transitioned her from 5 bottles to 4 bottles a day, but each bottle is 2 oz more than before, so she gets roughly the same amount of formula as she was. We tested this out over the weekend, and it worked well, so we decided to give it a shot at DC as well.

So now, she gets a bottle and cereal at home in the a.m.

She gets two 8 oz bottles, along with 2 oz of fruit at day care.

She gets 2 oz of veggies at supper time and an 8 oz bottle at bed time.

She is averaging between 28 and 32 oz of formula (I offer 32 oz). Before starting the 3rd solid meal this past weekend, she was averaging 34 oz of formula, so she's still getting most of her calories and nutrition from her bottles.

  • My DC usually feeds my girls cereal once a day (either in the morning or afternoon) and puffs in the afternoon. I feed them cereal and a vegetable when I get them home in the evening. They still have a bottle or are BF every 3 hours and take 6-7 ounces. I would like to be able to fit one more solids feeding in there, but it just doesn't work out with our schedules. I think as long as she isn't eating a ton of the solids at one sitting, it shouldn't affect her BM intake. I give mine 2 tablespoons of cereal and 2 tablespoons of vegetable in the evening and that seems to be just enough.

  • We brought the food to daycare, I showed them about how thick I mix her food (she hates runny purees so we add oatmeal to everything), and they went from there. They've done this more often than I have, so I let them follow her cues. She ate breakfast only for a few weeks, and then started adding lunch. She loves fruit, not so much with the veggies, so she eats a tub of fruit in the AM, half a tub of veggies for lunch, and usually another half tub of something at home at night. Her BM intake, at daycare or at home, has not changed. She's still nursing in the AM and PM, waking once a night to nurse and taking three 4-oz bottles a day a daycare. If that changed, we would talk to them about lowering the solids. I think your plan to wait on a third meal until 8 months sounds fine. GL!

  • Hi!  I am sneaking over from 3-6 mo early.  I think even at 6 months BM or formula should be the main source of nutrients.  That said, at 6ish months, we will be giving DD at least 1 if not 2 more meals.  Currently she too gets "dinner".  I think if you start with 1 more then maybe a month later do 1 more, it would help work her into it?

  • My DD isn't quite 6 months, but she starts daycare in a few weeks and we've just started solids.  I don't think she'll be ready for 3 meals at that point, but my plan is like a pp'ers, to where I'll feed her in the a.m. before daycare and she'll either have 1 more meal at DC around lunch, or at home for dinner.

She also eats 4, 8 oz bottles a day and has been for the last month or so.

This!  Talk to them - they will probably have suggestions.

  • yes talk to your daycare. I started bringing cereal for my LO to eat in the AM at about 5 months. At about 7 months i started bringing lunch for him too. It really didn't change the bottles he was getting, it just added to them. My guy is a big eater though. this is his daycare schedule:

arrival 8 am (nurses at home)

Breakfast solids (usually fruit and cereal) 8:30

    5 oz bottle BM 9:30

I go and nurse him at 12:30

after i leave they give him lunch (usually a fruit and a veggie)

    4ish 5 oz bottle

my husband gives him solids at home at around 5:30 for dinner, and then i nurse him at 6 when i get home and again before he goes to bed around 8.

I get all his food ready to eat at home. Mix cereal etc. They heat it and feed. Personally i wouldn't skip meals bc of daycare . . .just talk with them about how they are comfortable handling. good luck!

  • I would start with one meal at daycare and go up to two at DC later. My DC just pressured me into trying two meals of solids At DC ( plus she gets 1 solid meal at gome at night) and she hardly took her bottles that day, so I told them absolutely not. My personal experience is that they are not used to people that are not pushing solids. We get a report each day of how much she eats/drinks, and we adjust her solids intake as needed to make sure her bm consumption is good, and you should get a similar report and be able to do the same. Definitely start with just going from one meal to two and them to three after two meals are going well and baby indicates a need for more. I do not plan on getting to three meals until 9 months unless she needs more sooner. But right now bm and two small solid meals have been good for us. Oh and I think kellymom.com shows what to aim for as far as what percentage should be of solids based on age you want to wean.

  • DD is getting 3 meals a day, 2 of which are at daycare. Formula is still her main source of nutrition and gets between 24-28oz a day. Our pedi wants us to stay within that range. She gets a 6oz bottle when she wakes up, 2 at daycare, and 1 before bed. She wakes up sometimes in the middle of the night and has a 4oz bottle.

As far as sending in solids, I mix her breakfast (fruit with oatmeal) at home so that DC doesn't have to worry about getting the consistency right. For lunch, she gets either a veggie puree or yogurt.

I definitely agree with PP about just sending breakfast to DC for now to see how it goes before sending in a lunch.
