Preemies

Are any of your friends with full term babies concerned about RSV?

I have a couple of friends with newborns who take their babies to public places etc all the time. On of my friends with a 6 week old even signed her baby up for "gymboree" (i.e. germboree).

It is my understanding that RSV can be just as dangerous for a very young infant as for a preemie, am I wrong? I don't want to scare my friends so I don't say anything to them.

  • None of my friends have ever mentioned it - not yet, at least. RSV season starts in Nov. here.

I wonder if pedis even warn full term babies about it? I just feel like it is such a huge thing in our lives (avoiding it, fighting for our synagis etc) and they aren't even aware of what it is. Many of my friends are even planning huge family gatherings in Thanksgiving with kids who are in school and DC.

  • my friends with full term babies know of RSV.  But only because last season one baby caught RSV and was hospitalized for a long time. Before that no one had ever heard of it. The only good thing to come out of that bad situation is that this season everyone is taking alot of extra precautions and most people have been super understanding of us wanting to keep our babies safe from RSV.

  • Not at all. A couple of them have had babies get it. According to them "it wasn't that bad". They also all send their LOs to daycare.

  • Our pedi said to be careful with our 35weekers (eg, don't hang out in crowded places all winter) but not to worry too much (they also don't qualify for the vaccine, even our IUGR baby). They'll be in daycare in Jan anyway, so we just have to cross our fingers and be smart.
  • Some of our friends know about it but they work in the medical field. The rest are all a little confused about why we have to be so careful but they are also used to us being in hibernation mode (we only had a couple months of freedom) so its not a big adjustment.
  • I think it's not a big deal to them.  They just see it as a bad cold.

I know another May Momma's daughter has RSV right now.  Can't remember where she lives, but her baby was full term.

  • Honestly, I had never even heard of it until a friends' kid got it. Prior to having preemies, I had thought it was a bit overkill to sanitize everything - we used the "if he gets exposed, then he won't get sick later" approach with him. That said, I have a friend whose full-term newborn got RSV and her 2 year old got it as well. So I think it's something everyone should at least know about it.

  • I'm not a preemie mom (my daughter was full-term at 38 weeks), but I figured I'd jump in.

I'm REALLY concerned about RSV because I had it in April while I was pregnant. I was sick beyond belief, and especially because I was pregnant, they couldn't give me much to help it.  It was hellish.  I've inquired about getting Synagis for my daughter or for me, but neither of us qualify.

I can only imagine how much worse it is for a full-term baby or a preemie. Sad

But despite my concern, I also feel like I need to weigh caution versus my own sanity.  We go to Gymboree twice a week, partially because if I didn't get out of the house, I'd go stark raving mad. DD is still really young, so we don't use any of the equipment, and the parents are really the ones touching the toys.  We still worship the god of Purell though. =)
