When to ditch the sippy?

R has no problem drinking from a cup at the table. However I still find myself giving a sippy, even with meals. He usually doesn't finish the drink, so I end up using a second cup anyway so he can walk around with the drink.

I have a cupboard FULL of sippies....way too many but I can't break the sippy cycle! lol I bring him a sippy of milk every morning when he wakes for the day, then he has his juice with breakfast. When that is gone I refill with water and he can sip on it until lunch. We also always let him have a sippy of water in the car. I do have a couple of spill resistant ( we all know NOTHING is spill proof) water bottles, maybe I should try those for awhile and only give the sippy in the a.m.?

Does your toddler still use the sippy mainly, or do you have your cupboard space back?

Re: When to ditch the sippy?

  • See I think this is why I am struggling w this whole bottle-sippy nonsense. DH and I both have water bottles that we basically have with us constantly, so giving a drink when I have a drink means having a cup 24/7. Sorry that doesn't help, only further explains my confusion.

  • I'm in the same boat. I've been giving him a cup at the table w/ his meals, but I definitely don't trust him to have it if he's sitting at his little picnic table in the living room (where he sometimes eats breakfast, and always eats snacks)

Since he's started DC, they only drink from cups so he's gotten really good at not spilling. But I can see a cup sitting on the coffee table and a toy getting thrown at it and spilling milk/juice/water everywhere!

  • We wanted to start giving Evan milk at the table in a regular cup and then a water bottle to have throughout the day to drink water...we just haven't started it yet :)

  • Every time 10 of them fall on my head when I open the cabinet door I think, "I really need to get rid of these. But, we still need them for daycare, and for long trips in the car. One of these days I'll get rid of all of 2 or 3 of them, but I guess I've just been too lazy.
  • I only do sippys in the car.  Well, no, I guess I can't say that anymore.  Bri has been asking for milk at night before bed and I give her a sippy, but that actually just started about a month ago.  Other than that, only open cups.  They mostly drink water so it isn't a big deal, and the cups always stay at the kitchen table.  They both were drinking out of open cups by themselves since they could lift the cup.  It was a surprise for me when Ty entered EI and preschool that early childhood educators are pretty much anti-sippy at any age.  The teacher in the 2s room at Bri(formerly Ty)'s preschool never gave her twin a bottle OR sippy, ever.  They went completely from breast to open cup.  I thought that was impressive.
