What would you say?

DH and I just got home last night after EIGHTEEN days in Colorado to be at CCRM.  I'm a teacher and all of my close friends on staff and those I work directly with knew about what was going on and why I'd be gone, but that leaves a LARGE amount of people who have no idea (and my principal said people have been asking questions).  I also had a letter prepared for my sub to send home with students basically saying I'd be out due to "personal family matters" or something to that effect.  However I know there will be questions from staff and students alike and I don't know how I'm going to field them.  I obviously knew I was going to be out, since I had the same sub the entire time, and it's one thing to say "personal family matters" in a letter but another to SAY those words...it just sounds awkward.

What would you say?

Re: What would you say?

  • I would probably say something to the effect of "personal medical issues". Hopefully people would be tactful and wouldn't press you for more information but if they do, you could just say, "I'm sorry, it's personal" and leave it at that. I've had to use that a time or two and no one asked any further questions. HTH!

Yeah, I know...Ugh, I just see myself having a hard time being "forceful" about it to drop it.  I'm also leery of mentioning it was for anything medical because then rumors start to fly.  Not that they aren't already from what I've heard.  Oh well...I just need to get over it!

  • When I was out, I let my kids know that I had to have a small surgery and that I was all better now. They were just glad to have me back. Good luck. I know it isn't easy explaining all of this.

I know what you mean. I wish people would just mind their own business.

I would love to have the b*&ls to say something to make the person asking feel REALLY uncomfortable if they kept pressing me...something like, "Well, I've been having this discharge...". LOL.

  • this wounds like it could get tough.. especially because unfortunately tact isn't always uppermost in peoples minds when they are curious about something!  But I agree with PP who said saying you had a medical issue and leaving it at that!

Hope all is going well and fingers crossed for you!
