DS has about 5 loveys - all different shapes and sizes. He likes to snuggle and in the spring he was always snuggling with a very warm blanket. Knowing that summer was coming I just started giving him a lovey along with the blanket and then after time (when it was sooo hot out) I stopped giving him the blanket. He's not very choosy which lovey or blanket he has, he just likes something to snuggle with.
DD was about 2 months old, maybe 6 weeks. When I was out with her she kept turning her head looking to nuzzle into something so I gave it to her. She was the only newborn with a fleece lovey going everywhere in the hot summer. She really holds it any everything, even then.
We are using something like this... LO is so so with it right now. He will play with the arms and rub his eyes with it. I'm trying to move him away from the blanket..rather have a smaller lovey like this.
We have 5 different ones; she's not picky about any of them. She usually holds onto it when going to sleep sitting with DH, but doesn't need it in her PNP to sleep. She'll play with them sometimes when awake - right now she's fascinated with the tags on everything, so she'll mostly fiddle with that.
She probably started to actually pay attention to them around 4 months, but we've been showing them to her since she was born.

We have a couple like this! DS does seem to like them while he's awake, so this might work.
We tried and tried to introduce a variety of things by making it always available to her, cuddling her with it, etc. It didn't work for her. Then, one day out of the blue, my mom bought her a little baby doll (plastic head, arms, and legs with a soft body) and she is SO attached to that doll! We did nothing to help her attach to it, either. I have no idea why it worked. She was about 6 months when she got the doll.

At 5 months. I chose a small teddy bear we got at the baby shower. I picked it because it was lightweight and not floppy. The arms and legs stick straight out. So I didn't have to worry any part of it would be weighted down or fall over her face. Since its light and compact I knew it'd be super easy for her to swat away if it somehow covered her face. She talks to it when she wakes up, rubs it on her face when she cries or to fall asleep. And last night she was pretending it was a boob- perfectly placed next to her face and slightly up and she was trying to latch onto the bears nose in her sleep.

They've had their loveys since they were 2 months old or so. I also use small loveys, multiple kinds.
I just put it over my face and try to breathe through it. If I can without working at it, they probably can.
