I have the 35mm and I have been happy with it. It is a change from the kit lens to not have the zoom feature, but I have adjusted, and the pictures turn out great. For some reason I didn't consider the 50mm- I think the one in my price range was not auto-focus? I don't remember...
I can't say a bad thing about the 50mm because it has served me well for years. However, right now I'm playing with a 30mm and I like having the extra room - especially when shooting indoors/tight spaces.

What camera do you have? Will the 50mm auto focus for you? You cannot go wrong with either of those so my question is what you plan on using it for and if you have the room in your house for the 50mm. I like the 50mm (I have a very old version of the 1.4) for fill the frame inside my house but sometimes moving back a little is nice too.

I have the 35 and really like it. I actually did have a 50 and ended up selling it. I liked it but it was really tight if I wanted to take pics in the house. The 35 just works better for me.
