Anyone know if Catholic Baptism is recognized by Methodists

Catholic Confirmations and marriages too?  Also curious about the other way around.  I know that if you are married in an Episcopal church and get divorced and then try to get married in a Catholic church you need an annulment but not sure about anything with Methodists.

Re: Anyone know if Catholic Baptism is recognized by Methodists

  • My DH was baptized Methodist & the Catolic church recognized it... Both for when we got married & later when DH converted to Catholic.
  • The Methodist church I grew up in was very relaxed and recoginized everyone.  It recognized gay marriage before it was the norm.  It's the other way around that can get weird.  We were married by my childhood Methodist minister. DH was baptized Catholic but did not practice.  Our minister informed us that he could be 'kicked out of the catholic church' or our marriage may not be recognized by the catholic church because we were getting married outside and by a methodist minister.

They don't "kick people out" for marrying outside the religion. I know of several practicing Catholics who married to other christians and non-christians. As for whether or not they would recognize the marriage- i suppose that wouldn't matter if you chose not tbe married within the church...

  • The catholic church recognizes marriages of other Christian denominations, but if a Catholic marries outside of the Catholic church then I believe the wedding must be blessed by a priest. If a Catholic marries outside the church and then divorces, the Catholic doesn't have to have a full annulment. There is a shorter, less invasive and less formal type of annulment. I can't remember what it's called, but I was researching this a couple weeks ago (DH thinks he was baptized Catholic, but isn't sure. I was baptized Catholic. It's a mess).
