Baby Names

Cecilia/Cecelia

This is the girl's name that my DH is absolutely in love with, and he's starting to sell me on it. He likes Cece as a nickname, and I think Celia is beautiful (and the name of a favorite local poet). Which spelling do you prefer? I've seen at as Cecilia more but with the nicknames we like it seems like Cecelia makes more sense.

Re: Cecilia/Cecelia

  • I just added Cecilia to my list, I love it.  I really like Celia, but as a stand alone name, not as a nn for Cecilia.  And, if I had to choose between the two, I would use Celia.

ETA:  Cecilia means "blind" and Celia means "heaven" according to babynames.com.

  • LOVE Cecilia.  I'd use it if I could.  When it was on my list, I decided on Cecilia since it's the more intuitive spelling - you can still use Cece and Celia as nns, since nns don't have to be exactly lifted from the full name.

  • I think they're both totally acceptable.  Although Cecilia may be a more common spelling, looks-wise I think it's got too many lines (the i's and l all running together), if you know what I mean.  Cecelia just LOOKS better IMO.

  • Love Cecilia and Cece as a nn. If it didn't rhyme with DD1 it would have been on the list for DD2.

I agree with everything.  Except that I already had my baby and it was a boy.  But if he were a girl we had it narrowed down to Cecilia or Celia, leaning toward Celia.

  • I have a very close friend whose name is Cecilia, and she is a sweetheart, so I love it!! She goes by Ceci as a nickname!

  • I prefer Celia as a stand alone name more than Cecilia. I also think it looks better with the "i" instead of "e".  Cece could still be a nn for Celia, it would make even more sense if you paired it with a "C" middle name; Celia Catherine, Celia Christine, Celie Courtney, etc... Usually I don't care for first and middles starting with the same letter but I think they are some gorgeous options available.

  • I dislike the Cecilia spelling because it makes me think of cilia.  Science classes ruined the spelling for me.

  • For me, Cecelia is more appealing to my eye. When I see Cecilia, I think of Cilia, which is in the body. Also, CeCe is a cute nickname, but I don't prefer it spelled CeCi, if that makes sense.

  • My name is Celia, and I like Cecelia spelled better that way, but really just because I am used to it.  And I like CeCe spelled that way better, but I really don't  think it matters all that much.

  • I love the name Cecilia (and prefer that spelling -- which doesn't prevent you from using either nn you like, btw, though I'd probably spell the first one Ceci).

St. Cecilia is also the patron saint of music and musicians which is a nice association IMO.

  • Cecilia is a top name for me and DH hates it.
    DD#1 11.7.07 - DD#2 11.2.10 (3rd Tri Loss)- DD#3 4.18.12
  • Cecilia looks more elegant IMO.
