PDD-NOS

Ok- I finally had the ADOS done on my 19 month olds. They were both diagnosed with PDD-NOS... if the scores were 7-11, its pdd-nos, and 12 or above is "classic autism". My kids scored a 9 and an 11. The evaluator did say that even if their scores were a little higher, she wouldnt feel comfortable with a DX of autism. I understand that pdd-nos is still on the spectrum. I was actually SO surprised at how well they seemed to do. They were so playful with the evaluator and were engaged the whole time. Signed for "more" quite often and handed her stuff they wanted to play with. She did say it was great that they sat with her (even on her lap) to play but she would have liked to have seen them "bringing her into their play". I guess my main question is what does the future hold for a child with pdd-nos... She did tell me becasue of all the positives and how social they are, that the label could be dropped before they are school age. But she also said she doesnt have a crystal ball to 100% say they wont "regress" and meet autism criteria at a later date... Is pdd-nos basically a holding pattern for a child until they are actually diagnosed with classic autism? I am trying not to drive myself crazy by googling all night, but I did a little and am getting so much different answers! Thanks to anyone who read thru this and can shed some light!!

Re: PDD-NOS

  • I don't have an answer for you but just want to say my thoughts and prayers are with you!  We are going through something similar with DS and I understand your questions.  I also try not to do too much online research; but it is so hard to not know what the future holds:(

GL and I am curious to see what others post!!! :)
