C-sections

Anyone worried about going into labor before scheduled c-section?

My first c-section was planned too, and I did not have a single contraction/sign of labor before having my son. He was born 10 days before my due date (my BP was a bit high, so my OB was fine with doing it a few days before 39 weeks), and this time it's been fine-- so I'm scheduled for the week I'm due as of now. I've had three friends all have babies this week (their second babies), and go into labor earlier than a week before their due dates. I asked my OB what happens if I do go into labor, and she said they'd just move up my c-section and she'd try and be available to do it. It scares me to think of that! I LOVE my ob, and part of the reason I'm so OK with having another c-section is because I trust her to do it! I know it's a pointless worry because I can't predict how things will go, but I am worried about it.

Re: Anyone worried about going into labor before scheduled c-section?

  • Nah, I'm not really worried at all.  My first c/s was unplanned (induced at 12 days past due date, labored 12hrs, pushed 3 wound up with a c/s).  I guess I just don't worry about things I can't control because what will that get me?  This time I know I'm definitely having a c/s, and while I do have a date set, if I do go into labor, I'm really okay with that too!

  • I had a C-section schedule for Oct 6, but my water broke and my DD was born on Sept 29. My OB was the one who did the c-section and everything turned out fine. Try not to worry about it!

  • That's what happened to me. I was scheduled for my c-section at 37w5d but my daughter had other ideas and her bag of water broke a few days earlier. I went into the hospital in the early AM and my OB delivered the twins a couple of hours later. I was worried about not having my bloodwork completed but I just brought my labslip with me and they did my bloodwork while my OB was assisting on another c-section.

  • I am really worried, because my OB doesn't want me to dilate at all bc of placenta previa and bleeding risk. I was just in Land D all day yesterday trying to stop contractions. I'm not sure if they will stop if it happens again, and LO had steroid shots to develop lungs. I really hoped to go in as scheduled at 37wks, but if I don't I will have which ever OB is on call :(. I had a glimpse of what that could be like yesterday also when the on call OB was the one in the practice that I do not like the most!

  • I'm not worried at all. With DS1 I had a failed induction two days before my EDD because my cervix wasn't ready and after DS was born they said that from looking at my placenta and him that my EDD was probably wrong and I'd already passed it. With DS2 I hadn't made any progress 5 days before my EDD when I had the planned c-section. I highly doubt this time would be any different. My OB said that if I went into labor he's do the c-section then. With the expception of being really sick my OB does all of his own deliveries. He said he loves his job too much to take vacations.

  • I went into labor with DS2 before my scheduled c-section.  I planned him for 7.8.09 and was so determined to deliver him that day I promised my ob I'd bring her homemade cookies if she'd do it (she doesn't schedule work on Wednesdays and that happened to be a Wednesday).  Well, DS2 had different plans and I ended up having him on 7.6 (my dad's bday).

I didn't worry about it because my ob comes in regardless, they don't have just whoever is on call.  I probably would have stressed about it.  But this time around I've realized that I really wouldn't care.  I barely even notice the ob doing the c/s - it's really the anesthesiologist I care about because that's who I interact with most during the surgery....

Try not to stress... you're not going to have any control over it anyway  Wink

This!  I didn't really interact that much with the OB who delivered DD, at least not during the c/s itself, but I loved my anesthesiologist.  She asked DH and me during the surgery how we met, which helped take my mind off the stress I'd just been through (my first c/s was unplanned).

I don't really worry about going into labor before my RCS because I went so late with no progress with DD.  If I do, whoever is on call will do it, but I'm comfortable with all the OBs I've met.

  • Yes, but I just spent the past 3 days in l&d for pre-term labor signs.  Bleeding and contractions that have thankfully since stopped.  I'm a bit freaked now and hope that the modified bed rest they have put me on will keep baby in a bit longer.

  • I am nervous about going into labor before our date (Halloween) because it's only scheduled two days before my EDD and this is my third c-section so I worry about the scarring from the previous two surgeries holding up in labor.  I was supposed to have the c-section on 10.26.11 because that was at 39 weeks but then my OB's hubby was deployed and her nanny is out of town that week... I really don't think I'll go into labor because I never even dilated with either of my girls but now that I'm older and this is my third I'm wondering if this will be the time I do into labor... FWIW my first was born at 39w4d and my second was scheduled for 38w6d.  I guess we'll find out soon enough - 15 days - EEK!  No point in worrying since I can't do anything about it.  Good luck to you!

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  I had 3 scheduled c-sections and none of them came out when we scheduled them.  The first came 4 weeks early, the second 5 weeks early and the third 2 weeks early.  I guess they didn't want me to determine the day they were gonna be born.  My water broke for all three of them so that's how I knew it was time.  I'm not due till June 18, but expect for her/him to be born end of May to beginning of June.

  • This happened to me this week.  I was scheduled for a RCS on the 13th and my water broke/contractions started the morning of the 10th.  I actually took it as a sign to attempt a VBAC.  My dr. was supportive and things were happening on their own.

In the end, I spiked a fever and the baby's heartrate was too high for too long and a c/s was called.

Should I have gone straight to the c/s?  I don't know, but I'm glad I got a chance at labor.

  • Thanks for all the responses ladies. I agree with those who said the anesthesiologist is more important-- I loved mine last time, and that's a big part of why my experience was so great. And with them, you can't pick, so I guess I just need to relax and go with it.

So funny, I've had two "scheduled" c's that didn't go according to schedule.  I don't at all expect this LO to arrive as planned either.

  • My OB told me at my 38 week appt she was going on vacation! I was worried about the same thing, but it didn't happen. I understand your fear though!

I wanted to go into labor on my own though!! I labored for a long time with my first (induced), but really hoped to go into labor on my own with this one. Even though I would not be attempting VBAC. I just wanted to know that she was coming on her own terms in some aspects  and that she was truly ready. Plus, I felt it'd be better for my body. Oddly enough, I did go into labor...early in the morning of my scheduled section! It was scheduled 4 days before my due date. It was a complete fluke, but my being in labor for the surgery contributed to some of the complications that happened during delivery. Again...complete fluke. It happens all the time where women go into labor naturally before and OBs are prepared for it.

Good luck! I'm sure everything will go perfectly fine :)

  • I totally hear you! My daughter stopped all movement at 38 wks, on day two of no movement and no response other than hb I had an emergency c-section. Never had a real contraction. Just try not to worry! The odds of you going into labor before your surgery are somewhat slim. Because you've never labored or delivered vaginally, your body doesn't realize you've already had a baby. To your body, this is your first baby and often times first babies don't come too early. That's what comforts me anyway : )
