Rash after c-section?

I have developed a severe rash a few days after C-section.  The bumpy rash started around the incision and spread to the whole belly and upper legs.  The itchiness is unbearable and drives me crazy.  I didn't have such a rash with my previous C-section.  Did any C-section moms have this?  How should I fight against it?  How long does it take for the rash to clear up?  Thanks for any information!

Re: Rash after c-section?

  • I had it and it was terrible.  They think I was allergic to either the iodine or something in the sterile solutions they used during the operation.

It started on my belly and spread to my feet, hands, legs, back, etc... Pretty much everywhere except my face.

Nothing I tried helped, I just had to wait it out.  It persisted on my feet/legs for about 2 weeks and then went away.

  • I had a rash after my first c-section several years ago.  Itched like crazy and looked like hives sort of.  The docs never figured out what it was, but said it was probably a reaction to the antibiotics I was given (I had spiked a fever during my labor and eventually ended up with the c-section).  I believe the rash was mostly on my back, butt, and stomach.  I waited it out and it did go away, but I used lots of aveeno anti itch lotion.
  • Thank you ladies for the valuable information!  I really appreciate it!  I hope my rash will go away soon!
  • I had it too. It was mostly in the area around my incision and below. The itching was brutal! I rubbed bio oil there twice a day when I applied it to my incision and just waited it out. I think it took a week. GL!

Thanks for the information.  You are lucky that your rash went away after a week.  My rash has been with me for over two weeks and is still active.  It seems that my arms will get it, too!!!

  • My friend itched after hers due to the pain med they added with her spinal anesthesia, but she itched all over and I'm not sure about the rash part.  I didn't have the itching.  Since I'm breastfeeding they didn't give me that pain med because they counter it with a benadryl type med which dries up secretions, like colostrum and BM.
