C-sections

How soon after having a C-section can you have another baby?

I had a C-section on July 1st (she was a breech baby).  We are planning on trying for #2 in March/April -ish so we can have a winter baby next.

Question, how soon after having a C-section can you get pregnant again?  Someone told me the other day that they thought 2 years was the proper amount of time...but I was un-aware that there was a proper time line...

Any ideas anyone?

  • I was never given a time restriction but I do know alot of people that have been told to wait a full year before ttc again.

  • If you'd like to try for a vbac most OBs want at least 18 months between deliveries (so you could ttc approx 9 mo after your first was born...some OBs want more time though so I'd check with my OB before ttc). If you are planning on a rcs I was under the impression you could ttc right away if you wanted to.

  • My OB had suggested waiting 2 years.  But ask your OB, as everyone is different.

  • My OB mentioned a year.

  • From what I've heard, 18 months for another c-section, and 2 years for a VBAC (from delivery date to next delivery date). But, my OB never gave me any instructions whatsoever. My kids will be 21 months apart, and she was thrilled for me to be pregnant again (no weird "well that's a little soon" comments). I'm having another c-section, but that's mostly because of my personal circumstances and what happened last time. I think the sooner you do it, the more likely your chances of having another c-section will be; if you really want a VBAC, I'd probably wait the full 2 years (so TTC when LO is 13 months old-ish).

  • My OB advised 2 years between deliveries was ideal - we were discussing VBAC as an option.  Answers seem to vary, so I suggest you speak with your OB as they are familiar with your history.

  • My OB suggested a year to 18 months. We just started to TTC #2..and he was ok with it, since DD is really close to a year. Plus, there is no guarantee that it won't take more than a few cycles to get KU again.

  • I waited ten months, got pregnant first try.  My OB said it was perfectly fine.  I can say at that point my incision didn't bother me at all, but up until a month ago, it was definitely sore with this pregnancy.  Surprisingly, it doesn't bother me now, so I wonder if it was just the scar tissue stretching.  I know someone who actually VBACed with her second child and she got pregnant with her second much quicker than I did with this pregnancy (her kids are maybe .... 13-14 months apart?) so even that can be an option if you are a good candidate.

  • It depends on a lot of things.  My baby was also breech and I had a really healthy pregnancy.  My ob said I could get pregnant and try for a vbac( he said he wouldn't consider a rcs for me) as soon as I wanted.  We are currently ttc.
  • This will depend on your OB. My OB recommends 12 months between deliveries for rcs and 18 months for vbac. She said that your uterus is more than healed at that point.

  • I wasn't told anything, but I also heard that you should plan on at least a year between births.

I hope to have a VBAC, so we're waiting a year and a half to TTC so that the deliveries will be over two years apart.

  • I got PG with #2 when DD was about 10.5 months, I had not researched the guidelines first (but ***vaguely*** recall being told to wait at least 6 months by a doctor during discharge). That said, I did come across the 2 year guideline soon after my BFP and was really worried brought this up at my first doctors visit and was assured that our timing (20 months between deliveries) was not an issue at all. Both the nurse + one of the Obs in my practice had about 18months spacing with c-sections.
