MPI, Reflux, and starting solids?

Hello there,

I have never posted here before but our DS was diagnosed with MPI and severe GERD at 6 weeks. Since he has been on elecare thickened with beechnut rice cereal and doing well with meds.  So this past weel our Pedi suggested we start solids.  I made him butternut squash at home, which he doesn't appear to be a huge fan of....and then against my better judgement we gave him some "Sprouts Roasted Bananas"....just to see if he would even tolerate solids. And he liked the bananas. If I had to guess I would say he had maybe two teaspoons in three days time.  So we have noticed an increase in his reflux as well as consipation since starting. Did anyone else have this problem, I will be making an appt with his GI specialist but just wanted to pick your brains.  I am going to hold off on the solids again until we see his GI doc.  Sorry for the long post....just looking for any personal experiences.

  • He's only four months old.  I wouldn't worry too much about it just yet. We played around with solids starting at 5, but he really didn't start eating purees and Puffs until 6 months.  I didn't notice any difference in his bowel movements, except they were stinkier, more like adult poop, and sometimes are orange if he's had carrots.  Granted, he is only MSPI.

Good luck with your appointment. I know bananas can be binding, but they never affected DS in that way.

  • First of all... Hang in there.  Having a baby with GERD is so hard.  My 13 month old has had it since he was born.  Our dr. suggested solids at about 3 and a half months.  It didn't increase or decrease symptoms.  Food will make their bowls a little more thick but make sure he's still getting mostly milk for his diet.  Banana's also can cause constipation so I guess be careful about that.  I hope ur son will grow out of this soon.
