Oops... Caesar Salad

So I'm an idiot. DH and I went to The Cheesecake Factory today and I was starving. The only thing that looked good that I thought I'd be able to eat was Caesar salad. After I ordered it and the waitress left DH was like "wait can you eat that?". I suppose I wasn't thinking and I just said it was fine. I didn't end up eating much, maybe about 1/4 of it, not like that matters anyway.

Well now, of course, I'm feeling a little paranoid. Yes, I should have asked if there were raw eggs in the dressing. Yes, I probably should have changed my order.

Anyone know if I should really be worrying about this? How long after eating something contaminated would one start feeling sick?

Re: Oops... Caesar Salad

  • We live in the US, they cannot serve food in restaurants that contains unpasteurized dairy or raw egg. I guess some people think better safe than sorry, but I don't go around asking if all the feta in my Greek salads is pasteurized and I've had plenty of Caesar dressing in the last week. Don't stress.

ETA: Oops, I see you're in Canada, but in terms of food safety I would assume the same. Especially at a chain restaurant.

  • It's funny you put this post up.  There was like a week there where I only wanted Ceasar salads.  I ate them almost everyday for lunch (at least 6 times) and never even thought twice about them.  This was weeks ago, and I'm still fine.  Guess I need to be more careful about my food choices and put more thought into them instead of going with my gut, literally!

  • You know what, never thought about caesar salad being an uh oh until you posted this.  I ate a caesar side salad a few weeks ago with dinner, but it had no affect on me, so I'm thinking you will be fine if you only ate that much.

  • The restaurant I used to work in used to make Caesar Salads tableside, and the egg yolks they used came pasturized in a carton.  I'm sure you're fine.

That being said, I'm a baker, and so I'm always making cookies and such, and quite often I taste batters and doughs to make sure they're right.  I don't taste much, but some do have raw eggs in them.  I don't really worry about it.

You are fine...they don't use raw egg in the dressing.  I would not worry about it.

  • Thanks, ladies :)

I mostly just wanted their croutons. Haha. The salad was so good. Of course, DH is always so worried something is going to happen to the baby that he's constantly mentioning things that send my imagination into overdrive.

It's not obvious we're first time parents... Right? RIGHT?!?! :P

  • Now i want a ceaser salad...

  • I specifically asked my doctor about this. She said unless they make it in front of you in a fancy restaurant, they use pasteurized eggs so not to worry Smile

  • I would be more worried about the anchovies that are in a REAL caesar dressing than the raw eggs.  But I have only had one real caesar salad in my life and they make it at your table so you can see what goes in it.  I can't imagine a caesar salad being on the hazard list of things not to eat.

LOL.  No... DH and I were in Buffalo for the day shopping.  It's only a 2 hour drive over the border.  He loved his pizza there so much this morning he's like "what's 2 hours in the car?  Let's go back today"

Haha, ok.  I was going to say.  I've only ever had Cheesecake Factory once when I was in Chicagoland (I think that's where I was) and man it was good.  My appetizer salad could easily have been a meal.
