Postpartum Depression

PPA and sleep

Any moms out there who's PPA is more directed at sleep?  Mine started with a panic attack in the middle of the night after the birth of my son in March, then my anxiety increased till I got on an anti-depressant.  They tried me on Zoloft first and the dose was too high and the medically induced anxiety started in the middle of the night causing me to not sleep and since then (6 months) I wake up in the middle of the night can't go back to sleep and then get anxious about not sleeping and have to take Xanex.  I am on Celexa now which helps.  I also recently started the pill.  Just wanted to see if any of you have sleep anxiety.

Re: PPA and sleep

  • Not as bad, but I had some serious sleep problems.  The Zoloft worked for me, phew.

for the first ~2 months I had an extremely hard time falling asleep.  So I never could nap, and it would take forever at night after feedings.

I've always been a light/poor sleeper, so I don't know if my PPA/PPD made it worse, or vice versa.

  • I also have PPA, and it is worse at night time. I lay in bed, wondering if my baby will wake up at night, and it makes me panic thinking I will have to get up with him. I even wake up in the middle of the night to check my clock to see how long he's been sleeping. If I wake up at 5am, and he hasn't woken, I have a sigh of relief that the night is almost over and soon I wont have to worry about it. The thing is, I have an aweeeesome sleeper. He has STTN since about 1wk old. I have nothing to worry about, but my mind thinks there is. Ugh. I just started zoloft and I am hoping this helps.

  • The sleep problem is how mine started.  Mine kicked in when DS was 7 months.  Couldn't fall asleep or stay asleep.  Mine also started as panic attacks in the middle of the night.  Then I would have anxiety about bedtime and not being able to sleep.  I was miserable...even went to the ER twice...wanting to die, I was so miserable.  I tried Celexa (10mg) and it did nothing for me.  I also tried Remeron...didn't work so well either.  My doctor also gave me Ativan (it is like Xanax) to take on occasion and I still use it b/c it really, really helps me.  My phyciatrist put me on Serequel (600 mg), Trazadone (100mg), and Ativan on occasion, but I use one .5mg pill on most nights.  My sleep is sooooooo much better now.  I also go to therapy.  W/ the help of meds and therapy and God...I am doing much, much better.  I hope you can find the right meds you need too and I hope things get better for you as well.  Sometimes it just takes the right med combo to really help.
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...
