I think my neice just read that and she is 11. I can't remember when I read it...maybe I was 12? I don't remember enough about the book to say what age. Whenever I need to know age reviews I use the website commonsensemedia.org It will give details of what is in the book or movie.
Depends on your kid. I was reading a higher level than most my age - I think every kid is different. You could buy it and look in it and compare it to books she is currently reading from. If it's at a higher level, save it for a couple years.

I'm not sure how old I was when I read it, but I would say that it would be okay for a nine year old. The Scholastic website ranks the interest level to be grades 4-7, so I think it would be just fine.
There's a lot in there about getting your period and stuff, so if she's up for that then sure. I have to throw out my absolute favorite author for that age group - Kate DiCamillo. The Tale of Despereaux is awesome, as is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane and Because of Winn-Dixie. I personally didn't like Tiger Rising, but I totally recommend the other three for any 9 year old girl. Despereaux and Winn-Dixie are both movies too, so you could do a movie/book combo gift if you wanted. I have never met a kid (or adult for that matter) who didn't enjoy those books.
**Disclaimer: Edward Tulane has some really sad moments. I was sobbing when I read it aloud to my class. They still loved it though.

Maybe just a little. I think I read that when I was 11 and got my period just months later.
Sorry I didn't get a chance to respond to your Mexico post the other day. I have a horrible sinus infection and wearing reading glasses bothers my eyes. We'll catch up later next week. Later, chica.
I think it's a bit old. A lot of it has to do with her not getting her period. And the period info in it is super outdated. They have to hook their pad onto a belt!

LOL! I totally forgot about that.
Loved Judy Blume books when I was younger.

My 10 year old niece read it in the last year or 2. SHe is very advanced with her reading though and has read a few books that I have read and loves more adult type books.
