Cloth Diapering

Newborn recommendations?

I am contemplating using CDs with my new baby (due in February).  I have been researching for weeks and seem just get myself more and more confused.  I want someone to just tell me, "Hey, you should buy...this, this, and this." etc.  What are your recommendations?  I know it can depend on the child, but what is a good variety to have on hand to start out with?  I don't want to wait until the last minute to buy them and was hoping to just pick up a few each month.

I would greatly appreciate any help!!!

  • I'm in the same boat as you (due in January though), and every time I ask someone this question, I've just gotten more and more confused. So I've decided to do something that is killing my patience and making the planner inside me cringe: I'm waiting. I've bought a few packs of disposables for when baby first gets here, then I'm going to try a couple of trials (here's the link to one I'm considering: https://www.jilliansdrawers.com/products/clothdiapers/tryclothfor10/tryclothfor10) before I make up my mind and spend several hundred dollars. That way, I can actually see for myself if I'm going to want to cloth diaper at all, as well as try out different types and brands.

I've even looked at my SIL's new collection of CD's (she's due in February and has less patience and more money than me!) and I can ooh and aah and think "oh, that one looks neat!", but I still have no earthly idea what is going to work for me and my baby. Mostly because this is my first and I'm not even entirely sure what do with a baby in the first place, let alone something so specific as diapers!

Good luck, though! I'll keep an eye on this thread, maybe someone will be able to help you out and I'll benefit as well!

  • I LOVED grovia newborn AIO's, but it's not the cheapest way to go.  I highly recommend a newborn rental dipe program (we used moderncloth.com, but there r others out there.  I wish I hadn't bought any newborn dipes and just rented.  Modern cloth lets u rent several kinds so u get to know what u like.  We did kissaluvs AIO's, Fuzzibunz XS, and Kissa fitteds with thirst xs cover.  Lots of people love bum genius xs, which they also offer.  My babe was only 5 lbs when we brought him home and all the dipes I mentioned fit him great until 10 lbs, some even longer.

  • I mostly used snappied prefolds with thirsties duo wraps, but I loved the kissaluvs fitted diaper for night changes when I didn't want to fumble with a prefold. It was really absorbent and it fit dd right away at 6lb 13oz, and continued to fit her until she was about 4 months old.

The Green Mountain workhorse was nice too, but it only fit for about 5 weeks. The workhorse was less than half the price of the kissaluv though, so I guess the cost of having to buy two sizes would actually even out.

  • I really like the thirsties hemp prefolds and GMD workhorse fitteds (the ones without snaps). I could get a custom fit and they never leaked. I use thirsties duo covers for them both. If you are worried about what will fit and whatnot, IMO you can't go wrong with these as they size depends on how tight you make it.

I really like the kawaii pure and naturals pocket diapers. They are trim enough for a NB and once stuffed, they are as easy as an AIO. I would try one out as they are super cheap, like $7.00.

I bought lil joeys and the grovia newborn AIOs and didn't use them nearly as much. The lil joeys leaked like crazy and DS grew out of them in like 2 weeks.

  • I had all kinds of diapers for the NB stage.  If I could go back, I'd stick to GMD prefolds (we used the bikini twist with a Snappi) and Thirsties XS covers.  I loved prefolds, even though I thought I'd really hate them!  I didn't care for fitteds and the AIOs leaked after the first couple of weeks.
