Food Allergy

reflux and milk sensitivity

I have been a lurker but now am really concerned so I am going to ask you ladies some questions. I do have an appt scheduled for Monday with the pedi also but thought I would see what you thought.

My DS is 5 months old and I have suspected a milk sensitivity with him sense birth so I watch what I eat and that seems to help with that.  However over the course of the last month when we started introducing foods to him he has become a big time spitter.  Now he spits up after every breast feeding every 2-3 hrs and anytime he has rice cereal. I quit giving him any food other than cereal because he wouldn't sleep after I gave it to him but with cereal he has been ok, sleep wise.  Does this sound like reflux or food allergy type thing?  My DH has terrible acid reflux and takes medication for it but now we are very concerned that DS is having the same thing. He doesn't cry when he spits up but he does it a lot. I fed him cereal last night at 5:30 and this morning at 8am after he nursed he threw up and it was still cereal.

Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated.  I am hoping the pedi can help on Monday but just wondering what I can change before then to make it better for him.  I guess ultimately I am thinking I will have to quit nursing and give soy or an alternative formula because I am missing dairy terrible and rely on it for my own health also.

Re: reflux and milk sensitivity

  • My DD had a milk protein allergy and reflux until 2-3 years old.  We give her dairy now, but I'm still not 100% sure she's ok with it (see my post above).  Our pedi ignored our concerns about reflux for 9 months, until we finally switched doctors.  We explained her symptoms (she had silent reflux), and they immediately put her on meds.  Within 10 days she was a different child.

I had to give up breastfeeding at 3 months because I just didn't have the supply she needed (partly due to the fact that she would cry & pull away from every feeding, now I'm sure it was due to the reflux pain), and we put her on Alimentum.  The GI dr. didn't want her on soy because he said 50% of babies with a milk protein allergy are also allergic to soy.  Plus DH is allergic to soy.  If you put her on Alimentum, make sure you call your insurance company & get a note from his doctor saying he needs to be on it.  They should partially reimburse you for the cost.  I know mine did.

  • My DS projectile spit up afer every feeding til he was 8 months old.  We were told it was relux but not bad enough to put him on meds.  Turns out he has a major intolerance to dairy and I wished that I would have known sooner.  Poor lil guy, we didn't know til he was almost 4 years old when we took out DD to get tested and got him tested aswell.  They say by age 5 most kids do out grow it.

I would be hesitant to give a soy formula...but I can't really speak to what you are going through.  My DD was over 1 when we found out so she went straight to hemp milk.  (That was her choice, its the only "non" diary milk she would take)

Give us an update!  GL :)
