I'm not sure if this is the right board to post this, but my 15-week pregnant older sister is kind of worrying me. She's always had a certain "fear" of gaining weight, and I'm almost positive she has struggled with anorexia and bulimia in the past. Well now that's she's pregnant, I thought something would change and she would eat healthier now that she's feeding nutrients to the baby as well. I was wrong. She doesn't eat hardly. And when she does, her "morning sickness" usually makes her throw up whatever small meal she had eaten. She's almost five months along and she's lost weight the entire time, hardly showing a bump. I'm worried about her, and I'm worried about the baby's health as well. Any thoughts? What should I do, if there is anything to do?
Re: Anorexia/Bulimia concerns
I'm assuming she is seeing an OB or GP who is monitoring her pregnancy? I'm sure they'd voice their concern if they thought her or the baby's health was in danger.
FWIW many people have serious morning sickness that lasts well beyond the first trimester, and causes them to lose quite a bit of weight. Sounds like your sister has a track record that is causing you to be concerned, so you could just acknowledge how bad her "morning sickness" is and ask if her doctor has prescribed anything for it? Or ask if there is anything you can do to help fix certain foods, etc.).
I agree with everything Carla just said. Also just make sure you are a strong support system for her. I dont know if this is crossing lines, but maybe reach out to her OB about your concerns? Also, maybe she should consider getting counseling for her fear of weigh gain?
