Santa

Will your kids believe??? Why or why not?

Until last year, I thought most people "believed" in Santa, but since having DD I've heard a few parents say they are not doing the whole Santa thing with their kids. One person's reasoning was that she didn't want her kids to think the gifts weren't from her and her DH.

We will definitely be believing in Santa... and I will probably go all out with it once our kids are old enough to understand. Santa will bring the big present every year and the smaller things will be from us I'm guessing. I'll also try to keep them believing as long as possible.

Re: Santa

  • I never did Santa growing up...my parents did give me some presents every year from Santa, but I always knew he wasn't real. They were very clear that I should never tell other kids he wasn't real, and I never did. DH's family did the whole Santa thing and it's part of their Christmas family tradition, so we will probably do it with our kids. This is the first year Max will be old enough to understand it anyway, so I guess we should decide what we're going to say!

  • We believed in our house.  I don't see anything wrong with it.  When we started to question whether or not he was real, my mom told us that he won't come if you don't believe.  My mom loved to go all out from Santa.  She would usually set up some kind of puzzle or treasure hunt for us to find our big gift from him.  I'm not sure what she would have done if we came out and said that we knew it was all her, but I wasn't willing to find out.

  • We still believe in our house/famiy.  M is totally into Santa and talks about him all year long.  My Mom brings over things Santa accidentally left at her house on xmas morning.  And we occasionally leave things from Santa or Mrs. Claus for ourselves under the tree. Big Smile

  • We don't do Santa mostly because we are very religious and we want to make sure that Jesus is always the main focal point.  Now, we do play around with "Santa."  When Tman wants something, I tell him to be a good boy and maybe Santa will bring it.  I also let him sit on Santa's lap at the mall and he loves it.  He plays along, we play along, but he knows he's not real.  I think we have a good balance on it.  We don't says, like some do, "If you change the letters around in Santa, it spells SATAN"!  We don't make anything wrong out of him.  I guess we just do it different.

  • DH and I had a long convo about Santa -- and we decided we're not going to do the whole Santa Claus thing. We'll explain it as a myth some people believe in, and not to tell other kids he doesn't exist.

We do intend to put our own kind of spin on it, though -- give the kids occasional "Santa presents", which are anonymous gifts, and if the kids want to give someone else (each other, us, their grandparents, whoever) "Santa presents", we'll let them do that. :)

  • We always did Santa growing up and do with the boys!  Santa was always very magical to me, I can't imagine not having Cruz and Jagger experience the same thing!

  • I was raised to believe and my sister wasn't. My guy's family is very into Santa, but I'm erring on the side of no Santa. I think he's a darling fairy tale, and I think that's about all he'll be in our house.

  • People not letting their kids believe in Santa makes me sad, and I know its a personal decision and all that blah blah, but it still makes me sad...  and I remember when someone here said that they didnt want someone else getting credit for gifts they bought their kid and that just makes me think that some people are incredibly selfish.   We will definitely be doing the Santa thing, and already do, Holden hasnt stopped talking about Santa since last Christmas and he's really looking forward to it again this year.  Kids only believe in magic for so long, and I want to keep their worlds magical for as long as possible.    I will try to keep them believing, although they probably wont get the chance to believe as long as Dh and I did becuase of all the parents out there now who arent letting their kids believe.

I don't think it was someone here... it was when you were at my house and there was another girl with her 2 little boys over and all the kids were looking at Ella's Santa picture. That is what made me think of asking this. I don't know her all that well, but she is really religious too, so not sure if that also has something to do with it, but I wanted to cry when she said that!!!

  • To me, Santa isn't so much about the fat guy in the red suit as it is about the magic of Christmas and that innocent childhood belief. I love that, and it makes me sad when parents tell kids early on that there is no Santa. Some kids aren't old enough to grasp that it's a flat-out lie when their parents tell them and when they hear their peers talking about what Santa brought them, they think that maybe Santa just doesn't come to their house because of something they did or their parents did, and that's sad.

I had a friend who grew up not believing and she TOLD her entire first-grade class. It ruined the magic for a lot of people. I personally feel that if you don't want to promote Santa, don't, but don't go out of your way to tell kids at an age when they don't have a "don't repeat that" filter that he doesn't exist. We will keep our kids believing as long as they believe.

  • We do Santa and we will continue to do so until I'm dead and gone.  We also read the Christmas story every year all season long and we believe you can have Santa and the christmas spirit and the magic as well as remember the spiritual component of Christmas.

Exactly!  We will definitely be doing Santa in our household.  Watching the eyes of little children when it comes to things like Santa, Disneyland, etc. makes me tear up with joy.

  • We believed in our house growing up.  My dad would sneak out in the mornings and take bites out of the cookies we'd leave out, and write, "Thanks, Santa" on the note we'd leave him. I remember getting SOOOO excited when I'd see that after I woke up.

In our house we're sort of treating Santa as a fairy tale and part of Christmas magic.  She's still pretty young so she's never asked specific questions about if he's real or not, he's just a cute grandpa looking guy she sees at the mall during winter, and we say, "Maybe Santa will bring you that on Christmas" about presents and such.   We just make it lighthearted and fun.  :)

Thats silly! One day those kids will be old enough to realize that the presents were really from mom and dad. Its fun!
