I wanted to name my daughter "Natsumi" because it means "Summer Beauty" in Japanese and she was born in June. I didn't because I thought it would be a little too strange here in America. She does have a Japanese name, just a little more America-friendly....
daughter born June 2011 via C-Section, son born November 2012 via VBAC
For girls names, I really like Willow and Alba. Not sure why, but they're a little too out there for me to actually use. I'm not that adventurous I guess!
Cree - for a girl. Saw the name while watching A Different World when I was a kid (actress Cree Summer), and fell in love with it. It's been my guilty pleasure name since then. And I would've used Cree Summer (my last name). LOL The actress herself dropped her last name, and the two above are her first and middle names.
DH and I are huge Lord of the Rings fans (and yes, wayyyy before the movies came out, but we love them too). I have always loved the name Aragorn. I just think it sounds very noble and manly. However, I realize it would be very strange to actually name a child that. For a girl, I love the name Siobhan, but I realize it would always be mispronounced and misspelled. I have a common first name that I have only ever seen spelled one way and people still misspell it. It's frustrating, so I wouldn't wish that on my children if I can help it.
DH and I nicknamed DS Seamus while he was in utero and ended up falling in love with it. It sounded so very awful with our last name, though, so we couldn't use it.
Married 08.19.06 ~ DS 9.30.11 ~ Baby #2 EDD 11.28.18
I love Darby for a girl... mostly because I read a blog written by the most gorgeous, creative mom with that name. With that association, I think it's a fabulous girl name... Husband hates it... as does the majority of this board
Saoirse [seer-sha], Siobhan [sho-von], Roisin [ro-sheen] for girls. I love Irish names, but no one here in Iowa is going to figure out how to pronounce them... Seamus for a boy, which I would use, but hubby vetoed it.
I love Saoirse and Mairead for a girl (not "strange" names, just more unusual I guess) and my DH's family is very Irish and we have an Irish last name, so it wouldn't be too weird...but it doesn't go with our other DDs' names.
ETA: Lavender was a big contender for baby #2...I think it was our 4th favorite in the end.

DH and I are attracted to crazy mythologica/greekl names, like Achilles and Leonidas. I would never in a million years actually use them, but DH totally would if I let him. I also have a soft spot for the name Huckleberry. Again, would never use it, but I like it anyway.
I just want to give you a world as beautiful as you are to me.

I big puffy heart love Darby too! DH hates it, plus it's part of a town nearby.
I wanted Gemma but DH said it was too porn star.
He wanted Owen but spelled Eoghan. I didn't want to have to spend too much time explaining it.
Grey, for a girl. :-( I still like it let's be reasonable. Fortunately DH hated it.
DH loves Grey for a girl. Seraphina Grey was the other name we strongly considered for DD.

The only non-traditional name on my list was Amory, after the character Amory Blaine from Fitzgerald's This Side of Paradise. DH nixed it, and I probably never would have used it, but I do think it's pretty (and the book holds a special place in my heart).
I loved Presley for a girl but DH marked that one off the list right away. For I boy I really like Boston ( not too strange IMO) If DH had his way he like Leonidus and Romulas for boy names...yuck
Agamemnon. I would never use it,ever, but I love it.
Girl:
Pretty much all of my top names were vetoed by DH and will never be used, including:
Valerie,Veronica,Freya,Calliope,Hazel.Lots of others, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Years ago I loved the name Summer. My good friend and I actually got into a tiff because she also wanted to name her daughter Summer! This was way before we even were thinking about having kids, lol.
She had her daughter 4 months ago and named her Kaitlyn. If we have a girl it will be Samantha.

It's not exactly weird but I really liked Willow and Shiloh for DD... but it was too out there for us. She is Annabel and DS will be Henry. Obviously we chose to go a more old fashioned classic route.
Re: What "strange" name did you want name your baby?
Valkyrie, as cool as it sounds, not for a child.
Star (personally) Our last name is a certain sly animal, and there is a video game called Star _ _ _
There's a woman in my book club named Gray.

Guillermo or Arwen
I have liked it since watching the movie "Catch and Release," and the main character's name is Gray.
Cree - for a girl. Saw the name while watching A Different World when I was a kid (actress Cree Summer), and fell in love with it. It's been my guilty pleasure name since then. Most of these aren't "strange," but DH hates them and I love them.

Boys: Orry

This is my guilty pleasure girl name. I didn't push for it though since it wasn't first choice.
If B were a boy, she would have been Finn. (Which I don't think is strange, but I got some side-eyes from friends.)
Finn was up there on our boy list, too! Still might use it someday if we have a boy.

I know an Eowyn (from LoTR). FWIW I thought it was strange as did most of their friends.
For a boy? I love Landry.
Boy- Landry, Meyer (family name)
Girl- Bellamy, Cora (not strange but H hated it)
