Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7 month old not STTN

Am I alone dealing with this? My 7 month old EBF baby is not STTN. He goes to bed around 7:30pm/8pm and like clockwork he will wake up at 10:30pm, 2:30am, and 5:00am. He then wakes up for good around 7am.

We waited until 6 months to start solids (via BLW) and I though for sure he would start STTN after that. A month later and he is still waking up consistently.

Any advice? From months 2 to 4 he slept beautifully (12+ hours) but things turned south after the dreaded 4 month wakeful period. I know that he is waking up only to eat and after he is full, he goes right to sleep. I tried sending my husband in a few times, but it just results in a screaming hungry baby.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: 7 month old not STTN

  • Mine still doesn't STTN, but went from 3-4 night wakings down to one after I did CIO. Yes, I know it's not the right decision for many families, but I was losing my sanity (I never even got the luxury of having any 12 hr nights, it's always been up every 1.5-3 hrs) and he was a crabby baby due to no sleep. Life is sooo much better all around for us now. But if you're not comfortable with that, perhaps you can start reducing his night feedings slowly? Like if he nurses for ten minutes, see what happens if you stop at five. Maybe eventually he will cut out the feeding. Or send your husband in with a bottle and slowly reduce the ounces over time.

  • We're still waking up once a night. He did cut down from two a night recently though...I think it just takes more time for some. We're not BFing anymore so it is a little different but, I recently started cutting his ounces down to 4 in his middle of the night bottle and it has not impacted his going back to sleep/staying down so I think that even though he was taking a full feed, it wasn't a nutritional thing (especially now that we're doing some solids). You're not alone though!
  • DD does not STTN. She has before, but it's certainly not a regular thing. She gets up about once a night.

  • My 9 month old still isnt STTN, although she slept great from birth-6 months old. Both of my kids were the exact same way. My oldest didnt start STTN again until nearly 1 so I know I most likely have a few more months of this. Bleh.

Unfortunately I dont have any help, just compassion.

  • My 7 monther doesn't usually STTN either, but it's not as bad a schedule as yours.  He goes down at 8 PM after nursing, wakes up around 2-3AM, and then wakes up for good at 5:30 or 6AM.  He also had a stretch of STTN between 3 and 4 months, but that ended during the 4 month wakeful and never came back.

He's definately had more STTN nights since we started solids (we're doing purees and started at 6 months) so I'm hoping it's an upward trend.  Is it possible LO isn't actually ingesting that much solid food b/c of BLW?  Maybe once LO learns to eat more food he'll sleep longer stretchs?

  • Our 8 1/2 month old has NEVER EVER STTN :)  It's pretty miserable, he wakes up anywhere from 2-5 times every night.  My husband and I have to take turns watching him (we both work) and my mother helps out once a week, but we are praying this ends soon.  We also dont want to do CIO- our son has had bad reflux and I feel bad making him cry if he's waking up from hunger or pain.

  • Same boat. I think it is more normal than not for EBF baby to wake often.  We were down for the night at 8, walk at 2 and 5 which was awesome.  Now we are 10:30, 2, and 5.
