Babies: 6 - 9 Months

My LO choked tonight :(

He's ok...but it was aweful! I was eating bran flakes and gave him a soggy, dime-sized flake. He was chewing and started gagging a little. He is great with finger food and sometimes will gag a little so I wasn't overlt concerned. Then he started coughing...and then his face got bright red and he was no longer coughing/breathing. I grabbed him from his chair and had to do the baby heimlich (sp?). It took a five strikes on his back before he was able to take a breath and then started crying. It was horrible! If you dont know cpr/heimlich PLEASE LEARN!....I don't know if I will ever forget the look on his face :( 1ht on phone

  • I'm so glad to hear that it all turned out ok!

I've been getting on DH's case to take an infant/child cpr and 1st aid course. That man doesn't know his way around a band-aid, and I'm a nurse.

I have had to use the Heimlich several times on small children, and it is scary. Most recently, I was doing a blood draw on a 3 year old, and the mom was behind me, giving their 9mo old a lollipop (!) when the top of it broke off and lodged in her throat. The baby couldn't even cough, and I turned around and the mom was trying to look into the kids mouth- she had no clue what to do. I opened the door to call for help and I turned that kid upside down and it took 2 rounds of back blows and chest thrusts to dislodge that thing. The best part? The dad was upset about getting blood on his pants when I stopped the blood draw to save his other kid's life.
