How many wipes for a dirty diaper?

I feel like I go through a million wipes whenever I change a poop/dirty diaper...   I am a wipe container's worst nightmare, me thinks.   :)   But then, yesterday - there were only two wipes left in the box and no replacement wipes within reach.   I somehow managed to clean her up with just those two wipes..   but there was a lot of folding and finding a clean spot involved.   Kinda gave me the willies.

So now I'm wondering what is normal.   On average, how many wipes do you use when changing a dirty diaper (not pee, obviously)?

Brought to you by IVF, ICSI, limited fert, and oocyte cryopreservation.
Because we're fancy like that.

  • Two but sometimes I get away with just one.

Edit: Forgot one major disclaimer - Kevin just started getting a tiny amount of solids last week so this is all subject to change soon!

  • Unless it's MASSIVE and horrible - 4 wipes usually does the trick for me.  On one particularly startling occasion, I think I went through 12 (for that one diaper change.)  But 4 per poopy diaper is our average!

Two for average, up to 8 for messes, sometimes just one if it's a neat one.

I think this going back to an old debate... do you fold your toilet paper when you wipe?

  • Oh no!

We use one cloth wipe. :)

Kira is still in diapers overnight, and mornings like today when she's popped we use 4 or so, but she's almost 4 and they're huge. ;)  Thankfully she usually poops in the potty...just did again about 10 minutes ago, in fact. :D

I love that I've bought wipes just twice ever (once before Kira was born, and then some additional nicer ones when she was about 21 months just for fun) and won't need to buy any more. :)

  • I'd say 2-4 unless it's a huge blowout.  One thing I do is wipe the poop with the front of the diaper as I'm taking it off.  Gets more of the big stuff off before I even start using wipes.

  • Oh I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought consciously about this.  Then I realized it is like what, 3 cents a wipe?  So I thought to myself, if I use an extra 5 wipes a day to make this easier, then it is worth it to avoid the willies.  Let's do the math: 5x3 =15cents x 30 = $4.50 extra a month?  Well spent money IMO!  My frustration is that daycare thinks that wipes grow on trees, but they take good care of my babe, so I consider that part of daycare expense.  I do use 3 on average but I have no problem using 5 or 6 or 10 for that matter.  One of my tricks at bathtime is to have a wet washcloth available so I can use that after an initial wipe or two and then wash it out while DD is bathing, but that gets a little willieish as well.
  • For Boodle, 1-2 (I always get 2 out in preparation and often barely use the second).

For Toodle, at least 2, often 3, depending on size and consistency.

    Ick!

  • Two to four depending on whether it is a brick or mushy.  There have been exceptions to the rule though.
  • ...and a totally gross confession.  When I use the last wipe and it comes back clean, I sniff the clean wipe to ensure that I got the stink off.
  • 4 +.  I refuse to get poop on my hands and am too nervous to do the fold over thing.

  • I use a lot of wipes for a poopie diaper.  My husband makes fun of me but I do not care, we are not at a financial point where we need to ration out wipes. I wipe, fold and re-wipe, on occasion will fold and re-wipe again but then I definitely get a new wipe.I also want to be absolutely sure that there is no poop in any crevice so I think I am more thorough than DH and less willing to fold 4+ times.

I would say my all time high was 9 wipes, but I have a kid that loves fruit and veggies so she has some um, wet poop.  If it is a bread and bananas kind of day I have been able to get by with one wipe.  Luckily, I don't really do a lot of the poop diapers at my house though.

  • I tend to use more for Gwen than Linc. Nolan usually gets one wipe too when he poops on the potty just to get all of the barnacles out!

Gwen seems to get more poop in her crevasses and the boys tend to have harder poop!

  • Normally I can get away with 1-2 for a poopy diaper.  My DH however - WAY more!

  • I will use half a container if that is what it takes.  No folding or conserving here.   But I have also been known to pluck a turd out of a diaper without changing it.  So what I waste in wipes, I save in diapers.

When we get into territory that requires more than 1-2 cloth wipes, we just dump her in the tub if we are home - I shudder with you.

Actually, DH sometimes just takes her straight to the tub because he'd rather just hose her down.  If we are out, he calls for backup and makes me hand him as many wipes as he thinks he needs - which is a lot.

  • Always two, unless a major blowout.  My MIL on the other hand, who is his daycare provider while I am at work, uses just 1.  She folds it this way and that way and uses every possible clean spot.

  • I can almost always do it with 2.  DH uses about 25.

  • We use cloth wipes, so I can usually do just one. We did have an amazingly poopy mess the other day that required FOUR cloth wipes. CDing ladies, you KNOW it was bad if I had to use FOUR cloth wipes, right? ICK!

That said, every time I have one of those poop-splosions of that level, I am reminded how grateful I am that cloth diapers don't allow blowouts because those would definitely have been major blowouts if it weren't for the sheer force of the diaper elastic. :)

  • For Caro, we use A LOT.  Her poop is rarely ever solid...it is mostly always mushy, and in all of her crevices.  So, we use a LOT of wipes...sometimes up to 10.

For Park, I use at least two.  One to clean his hiney, and one to clean his boy parts.  I am paranoid about getting poop off the boy parts ;)

  • Depends on the kid -

For DD, she has massive mushy poops, so I go through a zillion of them (probably like 6-10ish?)

For DS, he has constipation issues, and when he finally does poop, it is usually harder and easier to wipe off, so maybe 3-4.

But like you, I err on the side of way too many wipes!!

  • One.

I CD diaper so if I can wipe it up with the diaper instead of using a wipe I will.

If it is a real blow out I may have to use two, but then I feel guilty for killing trees.
