Curiosity Poll: Why did you have a c-section?

Re: Curiosity Poll: Why did you have a c-section?

  • LO was breech and I did not want to attempt an external version. LO was due 4/10; I scheduled my c-section for 4/4; my water broke the morning of 3/11; I was 35 wks 5 days pregnant, so LO was delivered. LO was still breech that morning so she was delivered via c-section.

  • I have a uterine anomaly that prevents my uterus from contracting properly.  It's heart shaped and the center where the septum is doesn't squeeze well.  So... failed induction is the reason but the induction failed due to uterine anomaly.

  • I found out at 39w2d that I had IUGR and low fluid and was sent to L&D. They started Pitocin but her heart rate started dropping to the 50's during my contractions. I didn't labor or dilate at all. She was born at 4lb 15 oz. It was about as close to an emergency c/s as you can get without having to be knocked out...I still had time to get a spinal but they didn't waste any time.

  • also malpositioning- OP with brow presentation. Pushed for three hours, unmedicated, zero progress. He never went into distress, but I was done and by that time I was convinced that he wasn't going to come out on his own.

  • I had a scheduled C-section with DD 5 days before my EDD. She was breech throughout the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy. Neither me of DH were comfortable with the procedure where they try to turn the baby, so we just decided to have a C. Mine was extremely easy and an added bonus was that I never "felt" any labor pains since it was scheduled.

  • Breech baby, plus dangerous pre-e only controled by hospital bedrest, lying on my left side.

  • I was at the hospital and supposed to be induced. But upon many an ultrasound, he was confirmed too big. So they said the best option would be csec and I wasn't gonna argue with them. He was 10 lbs 7 oz and measured 21 1/2 inches.
  • I haven't had my c/s yet, but I will be having it because I have triplets.

  • My labor was 28 hours, start to finish/c-section.  Water broke somewhere along the way and DS never descended past -1 station from the time I got to the hospital to 12 hours later even with pitocin and me being fully dilated.  turns out he was sideways and twisted and wasn't going to come out on his own.  I had a RCS b/c I had no desire to chance that experience again with a toddler at home.  DD never dropped and I never started to dilate (wasn't dilated with DS before labor either), so my guess is my kids don't fit well in my pelvis and/or do not get into a good birth position due to having an anterior placenta (this will be the 3rd time I have an AP).
    DS1 age 7, DD age 5 and DS2 born 4/3/12
  • I had had two previous surgeries to remove a uterine septum, so my MFM recommended the section for the same reasons as women have repeat c/s.  It was more precautionary.  After it was done though, my OB said I would have ended up having to have one anyway due to cord issues.

  • With DS1 I was induced at 39 weeks for high BP but no Pre-E. My cervix wasn't ready at all. I had strong contractions for 12hrs but never made it past 4cm so I had the c-section.

With DS2 I chose the c-section again. Since having DS1 it was discoverd that I have a lot of issues with my pelvic muscles and a painful bladder disorder. My OB said that with my pelvic issues and having a prior c-section that he would suggest another c-section but left it up to me.

I'll have another c-section with this LO.

  • I was in labor for 5 days (5 minutes apart, 1 minute long each), then 12 hours of pitocin, and never dilated past a 3, and she never dropped. We just found out DD has craniosynostosis, which is one possible reason; it could be that her head couldn't mold to fit into my pelvis, because her fontanelle was fused. We may never REALLY know for sure, but due to complications with my incision post-section all future babies will be sections too.

  • I had an unplanned c-section due to pre-eclampsia that developed into eclampsia (unbeknownst to me until 3hrs prior to delivery). I had 17grams of protein in my urine (diagnostic criteria for severe pre-eclampsia is 5grams). I was on hospital bedrest at the time, so they immediately sent me to L&D where they started my mag drip to prevent seizures (they said that they were amazed I hadn't already started seizing or having other symptoms). We were going to wait until past midnight, but Jack started having some bad decels so they delivered me as soon as my mag bolus was done. They told me my protein levels at 7:30pm and the boys were born at 10:33pm. So it all happened pretty darn quick! They were born at 34 weeks and went straight to NICU, so I got to see them briefly and then not again for 24 hours because of the mag. Jack had APGARS of 8 and 9, Ian's were 9 and 9, but Ian was still in NICU for 8 days, Jack for 23. Important thing was we all made it through in relative health :) They labeled it as an emergency c-section in my paperwork, but I'm not really sure my situation really was an EMERGENCY emergency...probably somewhere between unplanned and emergency.

  • I had a c-section after 2 hours of pushing because I had broken my pelvis in a car accident previously... the way the bones had set didn't allow my son to pass through. He had major sores on the top of his head when he was born from hitting my pelvis.

  • DD2 was complete breech from 30 weeks on. I tried pretty much every trick in the book to get her to flip, but she never did.

We had an external version attempt scheduled for the day I hit 39 weeks. If the version didn't work, we'd go straight to c/s. I went overdue with DD1 (vaginal birth), so I wasn't expecting anything to happen earlier than that. But my water broke around 11 p.m. at 38w5d, contrax started within 10 minutes, and we headed to the hospital for a c/s that wasn't exactly emergency, but not what we'd planned, either.

She had no cord issues, absolutely nothing was physically keeping her from turning, she just didn't.

  • 1) Overdue (Over 41 weeks, no doubt about my dates), failed induction.  They gave me cervadil and tons of pitocin and I never got past a fingertip dilated.

    2) Water broke, planned attempted vbac. I had been having contrax that night but they died off when they gave me IV fluids (I was strep b positive so I had to go in for antibiotics). I never went into labor at all.

  • I was borderline Pre-E so my Dr induced me at 38 weeks and I failed to progress past 3cm after 36 hours.
  • Emergency c-section due to HELLP at 29w6d. They were watching Baby A anyway because her cord flow started to slow down and she had IUGR, but it was the HELLP that pushed it to the point of surgery. My labs gradually worsened over the course of a week, and then took a nosedive the day of my surgery.

  • Fetal distress and lack of progress
  • I had a class 2 placental abruption. Happened during induction at the hospital. The staff was all over my symptoms (tetanic contractions after stopping oxytocin, 10/10 pain despite the epidural, lack of fetal heart tone variability) and I was open in the OR within 10 minutes of diagnosis. Had lost 1 liter of blood by that time, but LO did well and left the nursery a few hours later.
2 years TTC with 5 losses, 1 year recovering, 6 months applying for adoption approval, and almost a year waiting for a placement. Then, a miracle BFP at age 36!

  • I had a scheduled c/s at 36 weeks (after spending 4 weeks in the hospital) due to Vasa Previa. Going through natural labor could have killed our baby, so there was really no other option but a c/s, so we are sooooo lucky the docs found this extremely rare condition.

  • DD1: unplanned c/s, failure to progress - Stalled at 9cm with an anterior lip, even after being on pitocin for several hours.  Plus she was trying to come out sunny side up and became stuck in my pelvis - her position and size didn't help.

DD2: plannned c/s, didn't want to try for a VBAC only to stall again and end up with a c/s anyways.

DS 1&2:  twins, they will be born via planned c/s hopefully around 37/38 wks.

  • I was induced beginning at 36w3d due to superimposed Pre-E. I then got to 5 cm after 16 hours. Every time I contracted, his h/r would drop by 30. I then was given an Emergency C/S. His Apgars were 7 and 9.

  • Baby #1 (DS) - Induction at 38w1d because of pre-gestational diabetes. Women on high levels of insulin tend to have faster placental breakdown. BGs were controlled, but this was standard practice for my OB. I was fine with it.  Labored for 20 hours. Got stuck at 6 cm for almost 6 hours.  My OB offered me some other options (turning down the epi, moving about, etc.) to get DS to descend further, but I was tired and d-o-n-e done.  Delivered via c-section. Official chart notation is "failure to progress." OB said that DS was stuck behind my pubic bone trying to push his way out with the side of his face. Poor thing! lol! He was born at 8 lbs, 1 oz., 20 inches long, 9 and 9 on APGARS.

Baby #2 (DD) - Developed severe pre-e at 35w5d. Admitted to L&D for monitoring at 3:30 PM. At 7:31 PM, DD was delivered via c-section. She weighed 6lbs 10oz (my big late pre-term gal!), 19 inches long, 9 and 9 on APGARS. We were very lucky that she didn't have any trouble with breathing or eating and was able to room in with me and not have to spend any time in the NICU.

  • DD was breech at 20 weeks. We tried a version at 35 weeks which was unsuccessful so we scheduled a c-section for 39 weeks. My water broke at 37 weeks with some pretty good contractions. Went into the hospital and my beautiful baby girl was born 2 short hours later.
  • "Failure to progress" and ultimately diagnosed with "CPD." <--- which I think was crap because I had a VBAC with #2.
  • I had complete Placenta Previa

  • I was induced 4 days early due to really low amniotic fluid. I started induction at midnight and by 10 pm that night I was still at a 5. I had been at a 5 for many hours and couldn't seem to go further. The doctor reccommended a csection because I wasn't progressing, and the baby was starting to get stressed. I was also positive for Group B Strep. The doctor said the risk for the baby getting sick from that was greater the longer I labored.
