I spoke with the GI doc today and she wants to do an endoscopy for further evaluation. I'm definitely nervous about it. Anyone have any experience they can share? Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!
I had a scope done on myself when the doctor was checking to see if I had stomach ulcers. I was thankfully, completely sedated.
When I had my heart checked for a hole I was half sedated and it was a terrifying experience. I was loopy and I was awake enough to realize that I was choking (on the tube). It was awful.

My DD had one at 11 mos. I was able to go back with her until she fell asleep. The whole procedure lasted about 45 minutes (she had both upper & lower scoping done). Watching her come out of anesthesia was definitely hard. She was miserable until we were able to get her to take a nap. Once she woke up, she was almost back to normal - just a bit more tired. It was nervewracking, but went smoothly and we got valuable information from it. Hope your LO does well!
My lo was scoped on Monday, but I don't know if that was an endoscopy? We didn't know ahead of time it would be done at his ENT appointment. The doctor stuck a tube down into his mouth very gently while lo sat on my lap. He sat quietly there and never cried. I assume this was an upper endoscopy because he just checked his throat, his vocal cords and his little valve. It was no big deal but I did notice that lo was cranky that evening and needed some Tylenol. I figured the little tube could've irritated his already very sore throat (from reflux).
GL! As nervous as your are right now, just remember how great it will feel to have some answers!
Thank you so much ladies!! I just have to keep reminding myself that this is best for him. There is obviously something damaged because he still is having some old blood in his stool. The sedation is what scares me the most:(

An upper endoscopy is done under general sedation in an operating room. It also must be performed by a GI. Biopsies are taken from the Esophogas, stomach, and intestines. This procedure sounds different and seems to be for checking tonsils/adenoids/vocal chords.
I ask because we just came home from the GI and they want to do the same on my LO. I was about to post your exact question here, so thank you!!!
For my son, they are going to take biopsies to test for celiacs and enzymes. They are also looking for damage and why there is old blood in his stool. We had the blood tests done for celiacs and it came back invalid, so the endoscopy is the only way to know for sure. He also has severe reflux and they want to be sure that isn't causing damage.
I'm sorry your LO needs to have one too:(
It's much harder on mom & dad than LO. My LO has already had two done. They'll put LO to sleep and the worst part for LO is coming out of the anesthesia. Our little guy comes out screaming, so that's a little unsettling, but pretty common.
Good luck!
Emergency ileostomy 11/28/10, CF dx on 12/3/10 and ileostomy takedown 1/24/11, feeding tube placed 7/1/11...still going strong!

Why are they looking to do the endoscopy?

I've had an endoscopy before to check for celiac disease (which was, btw, confirmed).
I was asleep for it, and don't recall any discomfort afterwards. I do remember being groggy from the anesthesia.
It wasn't that bad.
