Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Am I alone...

DD is 7 months and isn't crawling yet, she is trying really hard but just ends up doing a face plant into the ground and getting upset.  She's been doing this for awhile now so we ended up putting foam on our ground so she'd stop hurting herself but now I'm not sure this was the greatest idea because she thinks it's alright to do a face plant into the ground.

Anyways, I know all babies develop at their own pace but I have a couple friends with 9 month old babies who are already walking! So I guess I'm just asking in here to hopefully hear my baby is not behind everyone else.  She sits good by herself and she's on solids good and she's super vocal too ;).

  • My DS isn't crawling yet :) he's freaking huge and my doc told me he will more than likely be a late crawler and may even skip crawling and walk first because of his size. He is about 30 lbs. and 31 inches. Don't worry...i know it can be hard not to compare but when you think about how many milestones our LOs reach in this first year its no wonder they don't happen the same for all babies! 1ht

  • The average (and normal) age to begin crawling is between 6 and 10 months.  So, going by that - 8 would be average.  DD isn't crawling yet but is very close.  DS didn't crawl until 8 1/2 months but then was walking (well) at 10 1/2 months.

I read somewhere that the time (early or late) at which a baby reaches a specific physical milestone has NO bearing on whether they will reach the next one early or late and this was definitely true for DS.

As an example - He began rolling over, regularly, all the time, in all directions at 10 weeks old which is insanely early.  But then didn't crawl until 8 1/2 months.  Seriously, don't stress, as long as you are still within the 'normal' range and you have until 10 months for crawling.

  • Thanks ladies, it sounds terrible but I guess I just needed to hear there were other LOs out there that aren't crawling yet either :p

  • My daughter is a lot like yours. 7 months, wants to crawl but gets frustrated when she can't, good sitter, good with solids and very vocal :) Our girls will crawl before we know it and when they do, we will probably be missing the days where they just stayed in one place on their little behinds ;)

  • If it makes you feel better, my LO is 6 and half months, and isn't rolling consistently yet.  He's done it a few times, but I think they were accidents.  My pedi says that he has no desire to roll, but he could if he wanted.  He sits pretty well on his own, but does occasionally tip over.  I do not see crawling any time soon.

  • That's where we were at 7 months. Abigail army crawls now. DH sees all these babies who are Abigail's age on here standing and stuff. He was worried a little, but I smacked him across the head and told him she's fine.
Kidding, of course. I told him that some babies just don't get it as fast, and he better be glad she isn't walking yet, because I'd be bald from ripping out my hair!!

  • Don't stress! Every baby develops differently. DD is 7 months and while she has just started crawling, she can't sit up independently yet. She also just rolled from back to belly at 6 months old.  Someone told me that it doesn't matter what order they hit milestones, just that they hit them.  Your LO is perfectly within a "normal" timeframe.

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it.  My son just started rolling belly to back consistently last night, before that he could only go back to belly.  He pushes up on his arms, but has never even tried to get up on his knees so I don't think he'll be crawling for a while.  I'm counting it as a blessing that we have more time to babyproof :)

Crawling is a milestone normally mastered between 6-9 months... if at all. A lot of babies aren't doing traditional crawling anymore. They'll army crawl or scoot around on their butt for awhile and then just jump ahead to walking.

  • DD just turned 8 mo and is only kind of pushing herself backward - though she is a champion roller.  I was kind of worried about her too - but I figure that she'll learn eventually.
  • 7 months and no crawling here.  DS can get up on all 4s and rock back and forth and face plants though.

  • Every baby is different. My DD is only recently crawling more, and even then she's not doing it the "traditional" way. My nephew also crawled and walked very early, but there is no need to compare. If your daughter is making strides (like you can tell she is growing and learning new things from week to week) that's the best way to gauge things. If you're truly concerned, talk to your pedi.

This is exactly where we are at.  Although, she is not a pro sitter yet.  She can tri-pod pretty good but is getting there with unsupported sitting.  I am not worried as I know that when she is ready.....she will.  She is happy and healthy.  That's all that matters to me. Try not to stress it too much.  Before you know it, she will be running all over the place and crawling will seem like it never even happened.

  • My daughter didn't start crawling until about a week after her first birthday.  I was concerned but she's now 2 years old (today actually) and she's busy running all around and gets into everything.  I wouldn't be too concerned at 7 months.
  • DS started crawling at 9 months and DD isn't there yet, but she wants to go so bad!  One of the things that shocked me is how short of a time babies actually do crawl for.  DS started at 9 months then started walking at 13 months.  Although we think of babies crawling around all the time it is really only for about 4 months or so.
