moving to big bed

How do you get them to stay put? Wyatt crawled out of his crib last night and since I didn't have another option I dropped his mattress on the floor inside his crib. Since this is only a temporary fix I am looking for any advice to make this a smooth transition. I don't want him running around  the house at night so I am thinking of putting a baby gate inside his room, and just locking the door to his bathroom so he cant escape through the other bedroom.

Re: moving to big bed

  • Both our kids have gates on their doors.  Always have.  It was more to keep the dog out in the beginning but since Gavin was used to it, it was no biggie when he moved to the big bed.  When we transitioned him to the big bed, I just babyproofed everything really well- moved the dresser into the closet so he couldn't pull out the drawers and climb up it.  The only furniture in his room is his bed, a small bookshelf and a long open cube shelf from IKEA for toy storage.  But truthfully, we never had a problem w/ him getting out of bed.  In fact, he stayed in it until I came in to get him every morning!  He's only recently started meeting me at the gate.

  • We had the same problem.  So we have a gate in his door, but leave his door cracked.  At first, he thought it was so cool not to be in the crib, that he ended up falling asleep in the glider in his room, lol.

  • We've always kept the boys doors closed (fire safety says too) and we turned Bailey's knob around. Not that it matters he stays in bed until we get him in hte morning. He moves like a crazy man in bed and sleeps all over his bed but he never gets out when he knows its sleeping time. During the day he plays in his room and will get on/off his bed through

  • Thanks ladies. I know the second I lay him in that bed and walk out he'll be yelling for me. I guess I'll just have to take it night by night for a while. I'll keep the crib up in case it's a total fail.

  • If you are not ready or he is not really ready to be in a big bed, you can always get a crib tent. My DD started climbing out of her crib at 13mo and there was nooooo way she was going into a big bed! The crib tent is seriously, the best.invention.ever! I have zero intention of moving her to to big bed while she still sleeps well in the crib. We eliminated the crawling out and she is fine with the tent...problem solved!
