Need Help: Difference b/w Level 1 and Level 2 Purees?

Just got the okay to begin feeding my son some real food.  I have Level 2 (sitter) food on hand - probably leftover from my sister's baby (not expired).  I looked on the Gerber website and it seems the only difference between Level 1 and Level 2 is more variety, flavors, etc.

Is there any other difference?  [Meaning:  Can I be a cheapo and start using the Level 2's or should I go buy Level 1's?]

Thanks!

  • Level 2 has more variety in flavors, and it has more in each container. But if you just take out what you need and refrigerate the rest, you'll be fine. Just make sure to use up what you refrigerate within 2-3 days. :) I say, be a cheapo!! lol

  • From what I can tell, the Level 1s aren't mixed... so when you're introducing new food, you know exactly what LO gets (in case he has a reaction).

I have been making my own Level 1 (plain, no mix) food and bought a few Level 2 pouches for convenience. They sound way more interesting!

You may be surprised by how little your LO eats at first. One of those Gerber plastic containers (3 oz?) took us several days to finish. (I'm mixing it with cereal, but still... not much eating at first.)

  • I was thinking about this as well..... target was out of the earths best stage 1 carrots, but they had the stage 2. the stage 2 jar was just twice the size. I do wonder though if maybe stage1 is thinner than stage 2? b/c I thought I read that you can let your homemade purees be thicker once LO gets bigger.

  • My pedi said the only difference was the size of the container, and to go ahead and start with stage 2 if I wanted. I've been getting both, depending on what flavors were available in which size.

  • Level 2's are more chunky than the Level 1's.  They are a different variety of flavors as well.  My mom said they never had different levels for when I was a baby (I know, it's a long time ago!) but I think they have you coming-and-going and driving us nuts with all these levels of products for our babies!  There are different levels of nipples, food, etc.  I say, try the Level 2's you have.  If your baby eats it, GREAT.  If not, try thinning it out with some formula or nursery water.  That's all Level 1's are is thinned out purees.

  • Thanks all!  I'm going to stick to the simple stuff - just apples at first, none of the blends.  And we're just adding a bit to his cereal so really, it should be fine.  I'm going the cheapo route!
  • Have you considered the real cheapo route of just making it yourself?

I save so much money, and it's so much easier than I thought it would be. I spend maybe 30 minutes/week.

I have bought jarred stuff to travel with, but although DD will eat it, she doesn't get as excited about it.

Of course.  But I already have the jarred so at the moment that's the cheapest route of all.  I'll make my own once he's eating regularly.  Thanks.
