Two Under 2

For those whose 2u2 will share a room

I noticed in a post below that there are quite a few on this board who are planning to room share.  Just curious if you'll be setting up the room in any special way to avoid the two disturbing each other?  I'm considering having my 2 room share, but DS1 didn't consistently sttn until he was 12 months and if LO2 is similar then it would be a big challenge.

Re: For those whose 2u2 will share a room

  • Mine don't share a room yet (like you, my kids don't like to STTN until around a year), but I read somewhere that you should put the kid that wakes up the most closest to the door, so you can grab them faster.  I'm planning on putting DD2 on the wall right by the door and putting DD1 on the opposite side of the room.  Kids learn to sleep through all kinds of noises though.  DD2 would scream in the car and DD1 had no problem sleeping through it.

  • Mine began sharing when they were 5.5 months and 18 months.  DD2 was still waking 1-2 times per night.  DD1 woke up the first three nights after we moved DD2 in, and after that she stopped waking.  We had planned to give it about 10 days, and were going to reconsider the room-sharing plan if it was horrible, but it turned out fine.  Now they do occasionally wake one another (they are 1 and 2), but mostly just in the morning and it's not a big deal.  And sometimes they will just entertain each other from their respective cribs and give us an extra 20 minutes of sleep.  Definite bonus.

We didn't do anything special for setting up.  There is a white noise machine in there.  I had originally thought we'd put in two, but honestly, if one baby is crying 10 feet away from the other, I'm pretty sure 10 sound machines wouldn't do the trick.

  • We moved DC2 in with DC1 when DC2 was just shy of 12 months. DC2 was in our room (co-slept at first, then PnP next to the bed) before that. Transition was great, first few nights were a bit rough but they got used to it really quickly and sleep through any noises the other makes. Both still wake up from time to time in the middle of the night (especially lately as they are both cutting teeth, lucky me!) but have never woken up the other yet.

  • Mine will share a room for a little while. First LO#2 will share with us until STTN or around 6-7 months then they'll share a room. We'll see how it goes I guess.
  • I'm not sure when we'll move DD2 into the room with DD1. She still wakes up 2x a night and it's still really convenient to have her in our room in the PNP bassinet. I will say that both of the girls have gotten used to the other's crying already during the day so I'm hoping the same will hold true at night once they're sharing a room.

  • LO#2 is slightly closer to the door.

At bedtime LO#1 goes in his crib in their room while LO#2 goes in our bed, the swing, or the pack n play. This is more like a nap for LO#2. This gives LO#1 time alone to wind down and fall asleep. When LO#2 wakes I feed her and put her in her crib in their room. Then I go to bed for the night. When LO#2 wakes again I usually feed her and bedshare for the rest of the night because I'm tired and lazy. Not only do I get back to sleep faster, but bedsharing for the second half of the night results in LO#2 sleeping 1-3 hours later than LO#1 in the morning.

LO#1 has learned to sleep through LO#2's night waking. We use a noisy fan in their room.
