Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Babies with Reflux

My dd is 7 mths old and around 5 mths or so I finally forced my pedi to prescribe reflux medicine.  They prescribed Axid and it was a very very small dose.  It worked for a short period of time and then at her 6 mth appt. they prescribed Zantac which worked wonders.  I'm starting to notice some of the signs coming back, such as screaming (at times) for no reason and arching the back a little.

I have no idea if this is related to reflux or the fact that I have started to mix some formula in her bottle.  She was on breastmilk for the last 7 mths.  I have been doing this for about two weeks or so off and on and started to increase the amt of formula that I'm adding in, but it's still small.  Basically one or two ozs per 4 or 5 oz bottle. The symptoms are certainly not anywhere near what it use to be, but I don't want us to get back to that point though.  DD is currently on 1.5 ml of Zantac (Rantidine) 3 times/day.  I had to call the pedi for a refill for the Zantac and mentioned that some symptoms are coming back.  My pedi said that based on her weight and age  we should try Prevacid.  Basically starting out with 1/2 tablet for 3 days along with the Zantac and then if there were improvements stop the Zantac and go to the Prevacid 1 tablet twice a day. This is the tablet that dissolves on their tongue.  I have no idea if Prevacid comes in any other form.  Has anyone's lo been on Zantac and had to switch to Prevacid?  How did the Prevacid work out and what dosage are they currently on?

Re: Babies with Reflux

  • Never switched to Prevacid but my 8 month old had to go back on Zantac.  She was intubated for an MRI sedation and it caused her reflux to come back really bad.

Sounds like it could be the formula...but it may not be.  What formula are you giving?  Did the pedi tell you to try another formula before switching to the Prevacid?  That is probably what I would do.

I went through three formulas to find one that worked and didn't upset her as much.

Just sounds a little too coincidental that you started putting some formula in her bottles and now she has the reflux again.

  • Our LO was on Zantac (didn't work at all), then after trying a few other things ended up on Prevacid which DID help him a lot.  He is 8 1/2 months old and takes 1/2 tab in the morning and 1/4 tab at night.  We probably should have increased his dose as he got older, but his reflux pain seems to be controlled. Also, I agree, the formula type is a big deal.  Did you ever have to eliminate soy/dairy from your diet while BFing?  could he have a milk/soy protein intolerance?  If not, then maybe just try a more gentle formula.

  • Drs will always start them on Zantac but it is a very weight sensitive medication and after a while tolerance will build up and it won't work regardless.

Both kids have been on prevacid and it works great. It only comes in the solutab form and the dose is up to 30 pounds so 99% of kids won't outgrow it.You can either put it in their mouth and hold it onto their tongue until it dissolves or put it in a cup let it dissolve and suck it up with a syringe.  It does take a few days to start working but both kids have had severe reflux (DS had silent reflux)  and with prevacid it has helped significantly.

  • We are on Zantac, tried Prevacid around 3.5 months but he screamed for 3 days, I think it was due to the pill not dissolving enough, there were always little pieces of the medicine ( the little red specs) stuck in the syringe. I recently heard that Walmart and Target pharmacies will compound it into a liquid. I would try it again in a liquid form but the Zantac seems to be alright for now. We are also on Nutramigen which is the 4th formula we 've tried and it has made a world of difference.
  • My daughter has reflux and was on Zantac but it didn't work so her Pulmonologist switched her to Prevacid and she has a liquid form. I get it from CVS. They have to make it because it's a compound and MUST be refrigerated!!!!

  • My LO was on Zantac and it did work well but we were going in every 2 weeks to adjust the dosage because of how weight sensitive it is. He was then switched to liquid Prevacid (compound from pharmacy) and is doing much better. The Prevacid gave him some nausea in the beginning but he tolerates it well now.

  • It's weird that the reflux is coming back when you introduced the formula. I'd try another brand, or go back to exclusively breastfeeding (Unless you need the formula for weight gain). You can also try Colic Calm--it helps with reflux. Here's more info if you're interested:

    Good luck!

  • I don't think it is weird at all that this happened when you introduced formula. Formula can cause a lot of issues, especially if DD is allergic. Why are you introducing formula? If it is for weight gain I would make sure LO is getting more hindmilk, which contains more fat. In order to do that, feed on one breast longer. You can also introduce table foods like avocado and bananas.

I believe in the more natural the better. Meds just lead to more problems too. My little one had it as well. I exclusively breastfed for 6+ mos, ate dairy free, had LO see a naturapathic doctor, we used homeopathic tablets, and LO wore a hazelwood necklace. The necklace helps with acid and digestion. For more info go to inspiredbyfinn.com or their fb page. I swear by their amber and hazelwood. Boy, what a great discovery for us! I found a discount code, IBF20, for 20% off.

    Hope this helps!
