Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Anyone with 6+ month LO who refuses all solids?

My DD won't take any of it. We've tried cereals and even did a ripe banana today, hoping the sweetness would entice her into eating. But no. She purses her lips tightly, sticks her tongue out, cries, screams and makes it impossible to actually feed her.

I'm trying not to push her, as I feel she'll come around when she's ready and milk is still her primary source of nutrition.I've tried putting a little food on my clean finger and feeding that to her...doesn't work either.

Any thoughts, suggestions or similar experiences shared would be appreciated.

  • My 8 month old does this too.  I've decided to do more of a baby led weaning approach and forget about the spoon feeding.  Right now he has mum mums and cheerios, he doesn't get much down, but at least he doesn't scream like he did with all of the fruits and veggies we tried.

  • I don't have any experience, but I wonder if putting formula/BM on the spoon will entice her to eat off it?  That's what I would try.

  • Or maybe you could try one of the mesh feeders?

  • I saw mesh feeders mentioned in a post earlier today.... what are they?

  • My LO isn't big on solids. He outright refuses purees, so we are doing the baby led weaning approach and he seems much more receptive to that. He's just wants to nurse.

  • We're doing baby-led, and while LO isn't actually swallowing much, he is getting stuff to his mouth.  He'll eat Mum-mums and puffs, and loves pear (in a mesh feeder bag, it's too slippery alone).  But if I try to help in any way, he refuses.

Oh, sweet potato fries... big hit.  Avacado, banana, broccoli, and squash have all been fails, but we'll keep trying.

  • DD doesnt like them either. We just keep trying and when I make new foods I only fill the ice cube trays 1/2 full so I am not wasting as much. She had been hating solids, then we took a 5 day break and started back up today. She ate pears like a champ this morning (one small cube) and then tonight she wouldnt keep anything in her mouth.

I am not worried and not pushing it.

  • I EBF and my baby just started getting excited about solids last week. I have been trying to introduce them since about 6 months and LO used to push them out with her tongue or blow raspberries with food in her mouth and get it all over. I have just made the expereince fun and haven't pressured her. We would try every once in a while and she was more interested in playing with it. Now she takes about 2 oz once a day and then gets bored with it. It's really funny, because this past week she has also started looking at and touching my boobs and doing her little "I'm hungry" fuss. :) The past 3 weeks have been filled with crawling, getting her first tooth, becoming interested in solids, and realizing where the main source of nutrition comes from. She has also started swimming lessons. We have been busy!

  • DS didn't eat solids until 10 1/2 months.  At that point, I started holding off on formula a bit to get him a little hungry (not much but just enough that he was hungry enough to try it) and I just started doing it three times a day, religiously.  Eventually he gave in - We started at 4 months and had some frustrating times but he just wasn't ready.

Just keep offering it, regularly, and it'll happen.  But don't worry if your child doesn't get on them for awhile - DS has always been at the top of the charts (and very healthy), even with such a huge delay in beginning solids.

  • It sounds normal. Some babies are not into food until 8 or 10 months. I am a big fan of the phrase, "food before age 1 is just for fun." That said, have you looked into the baby-led weaning approach? We  are doing it with DS and it is a hit, but the reason I am really writing is because my niece sounds like your DD. After being allowed to play with avacado slices a couple of times over a couple of weeks, she finally got ready to chow down!  It turns out she has no interest in someone feeding her and needed some expirementing time to figure it out on her own. (My kind of girl, LOL!)
